Contract: Healthcare

Location: Derby, DE22 3NE

Hours of work: 37.5

Working Pattern: 06:00-14:00 / 08:00-16:00 / 09:00-17:00 /14:00-22:00

Contract Type: Permanent

Hourly Rate: £12.71

We are seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to join our Central Communications Team at Royal Derby Hospital as a Switchboard Operator.

You will be working in a fast-paced and dynamic hospital environment, supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of a busy switchboard and front-of-house service.

The team handles approximately 3,000 calls per day via the switchboard and helpdesk, as well as assisting around 1,000 patients and visitors through the main hospital entrance.

This is a varied and vital role where you will rotate across three key service areas: Switchboard, Helpdesk, and Main Reception. You will play an essential part in ensuring effective communication across the hospital and providing a welcoming and supportive experience for patients, visitors, and staff.

The Role

1. Operate the hospital switchboard, handling a high volume of incoming and outgoing calls in a professional and efficient manner
2. Accurately transfer calls to appropriate departments, staff members, or services
3. Provide clear and helpful information to callers, including patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals
4. Support the helpdesk by responding to internal queries and logging requests where required
5. Assist patients and visitors at the main reception, offering directions and general assistance
6. Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in line with hospital policies
7. Respond promptly to emergency and priority calls, following established procedures

8. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
9. Strong customer service skills with a friendly and professional approach
10. Ability to remain calm and efficient in a busy, high-pressure environment
11. Good IT skills and confidence in using multiple systems
12. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
13. Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
14. Flexible approach to work and willingness to rotate across different service areas
15. Professional manner with a commitment to confidentiality
