Job overview

Are you an experienced midwife looking for a new opportunity or wanting career progression? Or are you an experienced Labour Ward Coordinator wanting to join our fantastic midwifery team?

York and Scarborough Maternity Unit provides care across a wide and diverse geographical footprint. We have 2 Consultant Units providing full midwifery and obstetric services and various community midwifery bases. The county of North Yorkshire includes Areas of Outstanding Beauty, National Parks, cities and the Yorkshire Coastline. Vacancy is at the York site.

The role will involve the coordination of the the Labour Ward on a shift basis, you will lead a team of Midwives and coordinate workstreams.

You must be an experienced midwife. You will provide compassionate care centred on women, birthing people and their babies.

You are motivated by safety. You empower choice for people on low and high risk birthing journeys, finding learning in maternal and neonatal voices and through the governance agenda.

You require excellence. You promote highest standards of yourself, the MDT and your maternity colleagues. You are motivated to strengthen our maternity and neonatal transformation plan through your leadership

You role model. Yourcompassion, dignity and respect for our service users, their family and your colleagues is demonstrated through your communication and engagement in continual improvement.

Main duties of the job

Professional, reliable, safe and compassionate to women, birthing people, babies and their families, you will work collaboratively within our multidisciplinary team. Our environment is supportive, open and empowering. Our Labour ward coordinator is fundamental.

An integral part of this role will involve the skills to support and develop staff to their maximum potential, and encourage a safe and welcoming environment.

It is essential that you have the required post registration experience for this post, and that you possess excellent communication skills, are flexible and enjoy working within a busy, enthusiastic team.

Secondments are welcome

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

1. Registered midwife
2. Practice supervisor and practice assessor

Desirable criteria

3. Leadership qualification
4. Examination of the Newborn qualification

Skills and attributes

Essential criteria

5. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels across the Department, Division, Trust
6. Proven ability to analyse complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them
7. Mentorship skills
8. Ability to manage conflict constructively

Experience and Knowledge Required

Essential criteria

9. Taking charge and motivating a team at periods of peak capacity and working under pressure
10. Recent leadership or managerial experience (taking charge on a shift)
11. Recent experience of audit
12. Experience of undertaking appraisals
13. Experience of safeguarding adults and children
14. Recent experience of managing women with both low risk and complex pregnancies

Desirable criteria

15. Experience in ensuring safe staffing and skill mix at all times through the Trust rostering process
