Join Cumberland Council as a Highways Engineer
Location: Cumberland (Base to be agreed)
Are you ready to lead and make a real impact on our highways and transport network? We’re looking for skilled Highways Engineers to manage multi-disciplinary teams delivering highway improvement and maintenance works. You will have the responsibility for the successful maintenance of the highway network and be required to lead on the development and design of engineering schemes to produce efficient, effective and safe schemes throughout Cumberland.
Your focus will be on the day-to-day functioning of the existing network, ensuring it runs smoothly and safely. This will involve an immediate and hands‑on approach to managing highway activities, working closely with other teams and the Operations Managers.
This role also includes managing winter maintenance activities and coordinating emergency responses throughout the year, which includes working outside normal working hours.
Who We’re Looking For
To succeed, you’ll be confident in leading teams, liaising with stakeholders, and driving high‑quality service delivery. You’ll need a relevant degree (or equivalent), significant experience in highway maintenance, and strong project and financial management skills. Knowledge of contract management, HR procedures, and industry standards is essential, with professional membership and management qualifications desirable.
You need to be flexible and be able to attend occasional evening meetings and site visits as required.
