Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon to strengthen our regional complex pain (neuromodulation) neurosurgical services within the Neurosciences Directorate at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff. This locum post is available for a period of 12 months.

The post holder will join a friendly, research-active tertiary centre serving South, Mid and West Wales with close collaboration across neurosurgery, neurology, neuro-anaesthesia, neurophysiology, neuropsychology and specialist nursing.

Cardiff and Vale UHB delivers advanced neuromodulation therapies such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and intrathecal baclofen (ITB) via a multidisciplinary pathway aligned to national standards, with ongoing expansion of psychology to optimise pre and post-operative care.

There is a commitment to the general neurosurgical service (inpatients, MDT's, theatres and clinics) and also to the Consultant on-call rota at UHW.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide Consultant-level leadership across neuromodulation (SCS/ITB), deliver core inpatient / outpatient and theatre work, participate in the 1 in 11 Consultant on-call at UHW, and contribute to teaching, research, audit and service management within a multidisciplinary tertiary centre.

Although this post is full‑time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £125,509 per annum.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.
