Main duties of the job
Nurses will coordinateshifts, help develop and train within the new staffing structure consisting ofNurse Associates, HCA 3s and HCAs ensuring the highest standards of care aremaintained to help the children they support make the most of every day. Thereis also opportunity for nurses to spend quality time with the children ensuringtheir nursing competencies are maintained. There is also exciting opportunitiesto work within the wider Fylde Coast system with rotations into differentservices. As the world of childrens hospice care evolves you will be workingclosely with the other hospices within Lancashire and South Cumbria sharingbest practice education and skills across this wider integrated care system.
At Brian House ChildrensHospice we need paediatric nurses to help babies, children and young people whoare seriously unwell make the most of every day. Were looking for experienced nurses who want to develop their skills andknowledge within palliative care and complex care needs to join the team.Whilst the role can be challenging with no day the same, caring for very poorlychildren one day and the next creating some exciting activities allowingchildren to make the most of every day they are with us.
You will care for children who are staying with us at Brian House andthose visiting us for day care. Providing families with choice is central to BrianHouse care model, so you will also support children in their family homes andin community-settings.

Job responsibilities
Under the supervision of the senior nurses,be responsible for the assessment of individualised care needs and theirdevelopment, implementation, and evaluation without direct supervision. Supporthealth care assistants in achieving high standards of patient care.
Main Duties of post
1.To assist in developing a caring, supportiveand spiritual atmosphere for the patients and their families.
2.To Maintain professional and ethicalstandards and set a high standard of patient care.
3.To develop specialist skills in allaspects of palliative care and carry out all relevant forms of care withminimal supervision.
4.Toshare in the responsibility within the nursing team for planning, implementingand evaluating total care of the patient and their family.5.To support the SeniorSister/ Charge nurse and Senior Staff Nurses in their role.
6. Cover 24 hour nursing rota when the needarises and for the professional development in the total nursing care ofpatients requiring palliative care, end of life care and care of patients withmultiple complex needs.
7. Developmanagerial and teaching skills under supervision of senior nursing staff
8.Assist in the management of Brian Houseand determining nursing priorities under the direction of the senior sister/chargenurse and senior staff nurses
9.Supervise the work of NVQIII, healthcare assistants and volunteers and ensure that hospice policies are followed.
10. Maintaina clear, safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff.
11. Communicateinformation on patient care and related matters to Senior Sister/Charge Nurseand medical staff
12. Acceptprofessional responsibility for the safe custody, administration and recording ofmedications in accordance with statutory requirements and established Hospicepolicy and procedure.
13. Ensure correct use and due economy is made ofequipment and resources
14. Beprepared to cope with incidents or emergencies as they arise and report to thesenior nurse on duty
15. Reportany changes in conditions or situations to the senior nurse on duty
16. Actup for senior staff Nurse across the span of duties to cover annual leave andsickness and on a planned basis to gain management experience and professionaldevelopment
17. Beinvolved in quality assurance and collaborate with the management team instandard setting and audit of patient care.
18. Developcommunications skills both written and verbal to ensure accurate information isconveyed to other members of the team.
General Responsibilities
Toundertake all mandatory training as required by Trinity Hospice and PalliativeCare Services and participate in appropriate in-service training as and whenrequired
Maintainthe strict confidentiality of all information acquired especially with regardto patients and staff.
Toundertake a personal development review annually and through self development,continuously update and improve knowledge and competencies
Bea co-operative and supportive member of the Brian House team. Discuss anyissues in the post holders workload that may affect other members of the Brianhouse team and identify such to the Line Manager.
Tomanage and support all volunteers utilised in your area and to developeffective working relationships providing regular feedback.
Beresponsible for ensuring up to date knowledge of current policies andprocedures and to adhere to these.
Topromote at all times the Hospice philosophy and uphold the Trinity and BrianHouse core values.

Clinical
Assessthe individual needs of patients alongside the child, young person and theirfamilies and initiating and participating in the implementation of programmesof care to meet physical, psychological and spiritual needs of patients, carersand families.
Evaluateand document nursing care continuously in accordance with NMC guidelines
Beinvolved in multidisciplinary approaches to patient care together with otherhealth care professionals and clergy who are invited in the care of the patientand families
Assistmedical staff in providing care for the child and family, reporting changes insymptoms and needs as they occur
Developclinical expertise in symptom control under guidance of the Medical staff andwithin constraints laid down by the Medical director and Paediatric consultant
