At Coherent Scotland we develop laser systems that help people. Our systems are deployed in a wide variety of markets including renewable energy, microelectronics, fundamental research, life sciences and medicine. Our aim is to make a positive impact on everybody's lives by providing customers with lasers with superior reliability and performance. Coherent Scotland has grown strongly and consistently over the past ten years, even through times of global economic slowdown. We develop and manufacture many different lasers on site as well as manufacturing lasers developed in other Coherent divisions. Coherent Scotland is based at the West of Scotland Science Park in Glasgow and is a subsidiary of Coherent Corp., a global leader in the manufacture of materials, networking equipment and laser products. We are housed in a purpose-built facility, with research and development, manufacturing and marketing all on one site. We have a range of projects running at different stages of the development cycle and recently doubled the size of the factory incorporating new, purpose-built labs. We are currently growing very rapidly and almost doubling the size of the R&D team. Coherent Scotland is becoming the home of ultrafast laser technology within Coherent Corp. We have a very exciting future ahead of us as we control the roadmap for ultrafast industrial and scientific lasers under one roof. We have a friendly, business-orientated work environment and great staff facilities within our modern building, including as an on-site cafeteria. In addition, we offer a competitive remuneration package which includes a contributory pension scheme, subsidised private health care and free life assurance. However, if a work-life balance is important to you, you'll also be pleased to know that we operate flexible core hours which provide the opportunity to start your weekend early. About the role Reporting to R&D the successful candidate will work as part of the product development team providing the advanced mechanical and opto-mechanical design required for our laser systems. Benefitting from our years of advanced laser design you will produce designs that ensure reliable operation of our lasers under all operating conditions. You will have experience of designing systems that are required to maintain high tolerances over a wide operating range, using calculations or FEA modelling to predict performance. You will also work with the wider development team to measure and test the performance of your designs. Responsibilities will include: Design state-of-the-art laser systems and opto-mechanical assemblies Responsible for mechanical models, detail drawings and revision control from concept, though prototyping, to final production Work as a member of a multidisciplinary project team Maintain "best in class" documentation, including mechanical BoM and part revision control, using a modern ePDM systems Work closely with Production on tooling and fixture design Participate in formal and informal design reviews Liaise with manufacturing and vendors throughout the design, procurement and fabrication phases Support marketing on product definition and in customer acceptance Work with project teams to perform conceptual designs for proposals Participate with optical and electrical engineers to solve complex design challenges Conduct tolerance analyses of assemblies and critical components Design fixtures for production, assembly and test Support Production with ECO's and sustaining activities Build or assist in the construction of prototypes for functional testing Establish BoMs and maintain assemblies through ECO life cycle Generate and present to colleagues and stake holders conceptual designs & ideas Conduct design reviews with colleagues Education and Experience Essential Skills BSc in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) Demonstratable experience in designing precision mechanical components, assemblies and machinery using a range of different and appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques.
