Main duties of the job
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic hard‑working clinical fellow (equivalent to ST3) who has a special interest in lung cancer/ thoracic oncology to join the Respiratory Department at University Hospital Southampton.
You will be joining a department with 25 Respiratory Consultants. We provide care for the local Southampton population as well as tertiary care for part of the south coast.
We run a one‑stop lung cancer service, outpatient speciality clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings (twice a week). Our lung cancer MDT serves as a tertiary referral centre.
We have regular bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound lists, and there is an established IPC service within respiratory medicine that includes medical thoracoscopy.
We look after around 600‑700 outpatients.
There will also be an opportunity to engage in clinical trials/research.

Job responsibilities
This 12‑month fixed‑term full‑time post is to help provide comprehensive care for outpatient and inpatient thoracic oncology/lung‑cancer respiratory medicine at the level of a Specialist Registrar (post MRCP, ST3 or higher).
Responsibilities include outpatient clinics, lung‑cancer multidisciplinary team meetings, monthly pulmonary nodule multidisciplinary meeting attendance at bronchoscopy/EBUS lists, and the possibility to engage in navigational bronchoscopy, medical thoracoscopy and pleural procedures. You will also review respiratory (lung‑cancer) referrals on other medical/surgical wards.
You will be expected to be competent in medical procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic pleural aspirations and insertion of Seldinger intercostal chest drains. Level 1 pleural US is desirable but not essential.

Additional information: Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust‑appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria before submitting an application.
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training‑grade doctors and a named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post. CPD is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.
Grades for Trust‑appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a nodal point 5 include a minimum of 6 years of specialty training, holding a relevant higher specialty exam (e.g. FRCP, FRCA, FRCS), and a portfolio of evidence demonstrating that they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee).
