Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow in Aerosol-Cloud Interactions
Location: Exeter, United Kingdom
Employer: University of Exeter
Application deadline: 6 October 2025
Posted: 10 September 2025
Education required: PhD
Job type: Contract
Level: Experienced
Overview
The University of Exeter is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Associate in the aerosols, clouds and climate research group to participate in the NERC Southern Ocean Clouds (SOC) project as part of CloudSense2 and the Horizon Europe CleanCloud project. The postholder will perform numerical atmospheric model simulations using the UKESM1 and analyze these to identify processes controlling CCN sources in pristine environments, and apply novel statistical tools to data to uncover model structural uncertainty related to aerosol–cloud interactions. Depending on skills, there is flexibility to adjust the research focus and pathway, including potential analysis of additional climate models (EC-EARTH, ICON-HAM) through collaborations in CleanCloud.
Responsibilities
* Perform numerical atmospheric model simulations using UKESM1 and analyze outputs to study CCN sources and aerosol–cloud interactions.
* Apply novel statistical tools to UKESM1, ERA5 reanalysis, and observations to identify model structural uncertainty due to unresolved aerosol–cloud processes.
* Adapt research focus based on applicant's skills and interests; potential collaboration to extend to other climate models as part of CleanCloud project.
Qualifications
* PhD or equivalent in a relevant field.
