Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Obstetrician with an interest in High Risk Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Our complete commitment to developing careers means we’re looking for proactive, motivated, forward thinking, and dynamic individuals to join our clinical team.

This replacement post is based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage and comprises 10 core programmed activities (PAs) including a 1 in 13 Obstetrics on call commitment.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will join an established multidisciplinary team with a
range of gynaecology and obstetrics specialist skills and experience,
including colposcopy, hysteroscopy, recurrent miscarriage, fertility
services, endometriosis, urogynaecology, antenatal clinics for
diabetes, perinatal mental health, multiple pregnancy, preterm
delivery, bereavement, day assessment, post-natal care, fetal
medicine. The post holder will strengthen the maternal medicine and
high risk obstetrics services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To provide clinical leadership and expertise in Obstetrics, maternal medicine and perinatal mental health.
• Participate in continuing medical education and training of junior medical staff, consultant colleagues, nurses, medical students and colleagues in primary care.
• Participate in the on call Obstetric rota and the day time labour ward care provision and ward rounds
• Ensure the following sessions are covered by a colleague for leave: labour ward, on call, antenatal ward round, ELCS list.
• Providing clinical leadership for high risk pregnancies
• Providing clinical leadership and expertise in Obstetrics supporting nursing and midwifery teams.
• Maintenance of high quality patient centred care
• Shared responsibility for the day to day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
• Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity

Qualifications / Training


Essential criteria

* Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
* MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification


Desirable criteria

* MD or Ph.D./ Postgraduate academic degree


Previous Experience


Essential criteria

* Broad Obstetrics experience including maternal medicine
* ATSM, Contingent SITM or equivalent in advanced labour ward practice
* Other ATSMs or specialist training that supports the departmental needs
* Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
* Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice


Desirable criteria

* Experience in Obstetric ultrasound scanning or fetal medicine
* Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals
* Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
* Demonstrable experience and participation in research


Skills


Essential criteria

* Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
* Ability to work in a teams oriented environment and engage in MDT working
* Evidence of leadership skills and an ability to influence and motivate others
* Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
* Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making
* Ability to critically appraise published evidence


Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Demonstrate understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
* Comprehensive knowledge and insight regarding all the domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice
