ROLE: Senior Quantity Surveyor (MEP)

We're looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor (MEP) to oversee the commercial management of the MEP installation for the flagship Emergency Care Building at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will hold full responsibility for day‑to‑day commercial functions on site, ensuring the project is delivered efficiently, profitably and in compliance with governance, quality and contractual requirements.
Role Responsibilities
1. Maintain governance policies, commercial transparency and robust commercial practices.
2. Prepare and submit applications and invoices on time to support positive project cash flow.
3. Price, negotiate and agree contract variations to maximise project value.
4. Identify, prepare and secure loss and expense entitlements.
5. Support budget preparation, cash flow forecasting, overhead reviews and monthly reporting.
6. Negotiate commercial terms with clients and third parties; support tendering activities across sales, pre‑construction, operations and finance.
7. Prepare subcontractor enquiry documentation, assess commercial tender returns and coordinate technical appraisals.
8. Produce and issue subcontract order documentation.
9. Maintain and forecast subcontractor accounts; measure value, agree variations and assess claims including prolongation or loss and expense.
10. Proactively manage and develop the supply chain throughout the project lifecycle.
11. Build productive relationships with clients, consultants and end users.
12. Lead monthly CVR processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
13. Maintain high‑quality project documentation and update as required.
14. Conduct audits and inspections of supply chain agreements.
15. Provide commercial advice and support to the Operations Team.
16. Support the development and mentoring of junior commercial staff.
17. Oversee multiple contracts in line with company procedures and KPIs, including forecasting and budget control.
18. Monitor project performance, mitigate risk and manage potential commercial disputes.
19. Work with senior leadership to support wider business growth and development.
20. Working with both main contractors and subcontractors.
Required Qualifications
21. Degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management.
22. RICS accredited or working toward chartership (desirable).
23. Full UK driving licence.
Skills & Attributes
24. Minimum 5 years' experience in an MEP Quantity Surveying or Senior QS role, ideally delivering projects of similar complexity and value.
25. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
26. Exceptional organisational, commercial and administrative abilities.
27. High attention to detail with a methodical approach.
28. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with Payapps or similar platforms is advantageous.
29. Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
30. Strong team player with a proactive, collaborative mindset.
31. Professional approach with strong stakeholder management skills.
32. Excellent punctuality and timekeeping.
33. Strong contract administration experience.
34. Proven experience managing and securing time‑ and cost‑based variations.
