JOB TITLE: Unit Manager Reporting to Project Lead UM Team Leader ABOUT THE ROLE We’re looking for a motivated, hands-on Unit Manager to lead the on-site delivery of Outside Broadcast (OB), Flypack, and Remote Production operations. You’ll play a key role in the planning and technical execution of live broadcast projects, working closely with technical teams, production staff, and clients to ensure every detail is delivered to the highest standards. This is a critical operational position where leadership, safety, logistics, and communication come together. You’ll be at the forefront of on-site activity—guiding teams, coordinating third-party contractors, and managing resources to meet tight deadlines, technical requirements, and client expectations. From pre-production planning to post-event reporting, you’ll be central to our ability to deliver broadcast excellence. A BRIEF SUMMARY This role is focused on the technical planning, supervision, and on-site delivery of both contracted and non-contracted projects. You will be responsible for managing teams, overseeing health and safety, ensuring compliance with technical standards (including BS7909), and delivering within budget and schedule constraints. A strong understanding of broadcast technology and logistics is essential, as well as the ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams in a high-pressure environment. WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR Project Delivery : Leading the on-site execution of OBs, Flypacks, and Remote Productions, ensuring seamless coordination between departments. Managing crew and third-party contractors, giving clear direction and ensuring team alignment throughout the production. Ensuring timely setup, operation, and de-rigging of technical facilities. Health & Safety & Compliance : Taking full ownership of site health & safety, including adherence to BS7909 and other technical standards. Producing risk assessments and ensuring team-wide understanding of company safety policies. Acting as a first point of contact for any onsite safety concerns or escalations. Operational Coordination of RAMS including third party risk assessments Working with Commercial, Operations, and Engineering teams to meet project deliverables within defined budgets and schedules. Collaborating with the Project and Crew Planners, Resources, Rigging, and Logistics departments to ensure accurate and timely job preparation. Liaising with Heads of Department and Contract Leads for technical planning and equipment requirements. Logistics & Cost Control : Drive operational efficiency by identifying areas for improvement and implementing best practices. Capturing real-time changes in crew or resource needs, flagging variations to for cost tracking. Supporting accurate final project costings and ensuring all additional requirements are documented. Liaising with the project finance lead re adds / dels and post project reports and margin improvement Team Management & Communication : Serving as the key point of contact for your onsite team—handling queries, feedback, and performance. Facilitating clear communication between teams, creating a sense of community and shared purpose. Helping to train and support the junior unit management team in all aspects of Outside Broadcasts, Remote Operations and Flypack Continuous Improvement : Supporting new technology initiatives and more efficient working methods. Seek efficiency improvements in all aspects of on-site delivery. Regularly reviewing resource usage for operational efficiency. Providing feedback to help team members grow and supporting engineering engagement and contract development. Gather feedback from stakeholders and implement changes to improve workflows, processes, and overall performance. THIS ROLE IS FOR YOU IF YOU HAVE Excellent working knowledge of Outside Broadcasting, Flypacks, and Remote Production workflows. A strong technical understanding across broadcast engineering disciplines. Have a keen eye for detail, ensuring accuracy in planning, reporting, and execution. Proven experience leading teams on-site and managing third-party contractors. The ability to work under pressure, problem-solve on the spot, and meet tight deadlines. Are highly organised, capable of managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines consistently. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with crew, clients, and internal departments effectively. Sound financial, logistical, and operational awareness. Are diplomatic, level-headed, and skilled at managing complex client relationships and resolving issues professionally. Proficiency in planning tools and drawing software (or willingness to learn). A high level of organisation, time management, and the ability to work well within a team-based environment. Experience producing risk assessment documentation and a strong grasp of health and safety practices, including BS7909.
