The opportunity


EY is actively growing our Digital Engineering team in Belfast and are expanding our Java Developer team. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a leading firm whilst being instrumental in the growth of our service offering.

Your key responsibilities

1. Coding new backend developments and / or enhancements.
2. Quality assures program specifications and code.
3. Adhere to code quality and unit testing standards.
4. Work closely with the product team to understand complex business requirements.
5. Identify and implement integration tests, automating tests where appropriate.
6. Investigate and manage complex Live Incidents.
7. Coordinate or escalate defects / problems.
8. Present delivered features to the client.
9. Peer reviewing code changes completed by developers.
10. Support non‑functional tasks such as technical‑debt reduction and creation of clear API documentation.

Skills and attributes for success

11. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Software Programming or Information Management.
12. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a backend software development role.
13. Proficiency in Java, including strong understanding of object-oriented‑ programming and core language features.
14. Experience with JUnit and Mockito for unit testing, mocking dependencies, and writing maintainable automated tests.
15. Hands-‑on experience with build tools such as Gradle or Maven to manage dependencies and automate project builds.
16. Containerisation experience with Docker, including building and running containerised Java applications.
17. Strong understanding of Git for version control, branching strategies, and collaborative development workflows.
18. Experience working with databases, preferably MongoDB and MySQL.
19. Experience working on engagements with technologies and architectures in a product environment
20. Desired knowledge in front end technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Angular JS, React)
21. Knowledge/experience of agile delivery methodologies (Scrum and DevOps) and application development lifecycle

Interview process:

If you are successful in your application, you will be invited to attend an in-person assessment centre towards the end of February. As part of the assessment centre, candidates will complete a 45-minute technical assessment designed to evaluate their understanding of our technology stack (outlined in the Skills and attributes for successsection) and their ability to work with real code. This exercise will include a series of focused technical questions alongside a practical code-review task, where candidates will be asked to interpret what the code is doing, identify potential issues, and suggest improvements. We will be looking for clear reasoning around maintainability, readability, robustness, and modern best practices, as well as an ability to communicate technical insights effectively.
