We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Principal Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.
Key Projects
As an appointed Design Partner on some of the UK’s most significant and complex rail infrastructure projects, you will support major programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, North West & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail. Our in‑house engineering team delivers design solutions across all Network Rail stages and disciplines, driving improved connectivity, enhancing passenger journeys, and shaping the future of rail safety and efficiency.

The Role
As a Principal Engineer you will act as a technical team leader, providing advice, guidance and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients and suppliers. You will manage or influence the actions of technical teams, undertake people‑management responsibilities when required, and contribute to the commercial success of the projects within your portfolio.
Responsibilities
* Lead and supervise the preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation, ensuring quality, cost and programme objectives are met.
* Control budgets and manage costs associated with the production of deliverables, ensuring commercial success.
* Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, presenting proposals and attending progress meetings.
* Contribute to and lead bid preparation, taking responsibility for technical and commercial offers.
* Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.
What you will bring to us
* High level experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, equivalent to a Senior Engineer role.
* Capability to produce technically sound engineering solutions that comply with all relevant standards and client requirements.
* Experience managing project‑related health, safety and welfare tasks, including CDM compliance.
* Capability to act as engineering lead or CEM under the commission terms for Network Rail schemes.
* Strong understanding of design and specification processes, acting as Design Team Lead for both minor and major projects.
* Advanced proficiency with engineering software and tools.
* Excellent CDM knowledge, risk assessment and hazard communication; able to act as Principal Designer.
* People management skills – capable of influencing actions of technical teams and undertaking people‑manager role.
* Incorporated or Chartered status, or equivalent professional licence.
