Role: Senior Environmental Specialist – Environmental Design
Location: Penrith, Cumbria – travel to sites and offices required; remote working available
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, with some flexibility
Salary: £40,000 – £50,000 per year, plus £5.9k annual car allowance, private healthcare, and benefits

Responsibilities
* Support major highways projects in the north, primarily A66 NTP and M6 Lune Gorge
* Collaborate with Environmental Leads on Major Projects
* Lead and contribute to client, stakeholder and technical meetings, promoting environmental principles
* Co‑operate with the construction team to deliver on the Environmental Management Plan (EMP)
* Lead environmental impact assessments, identify risks, propose mitigation strategies, and develop management plans
* Obtain relevant environmental permits, licences and consents in a timely manner
* Work closely with designers to minimise impacts and maximise benefits
* Promote decarbonisation, climate resilience, nature‑based solutions and innovation
* Author and review technical environmental documents
* Mentor junior team members and represent the team in meetings
* Continuously improve environmental processes, procedures and related forms
Qualifications
* Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or equivalent (or equivalent experience)
* Practitioner member of ISEP (or equivalent) and working towards CEnv
* Robust understanding of UK environmental legislation and policy
* Demonstrable experience with environmental assessment for infrastructure or building projects
* UK protected species licence
* Strong working knowledge of UK Habitat survey, habitat condition assessments, Defra Biodiversity Metric and Biodiversity Net Gain plans
* Full driving licence (essential)
