We are looking for an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Histology team for a 27‑hour a week part‑time position at North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. The role will involve rotating through all sections of the department – Specimen dissection, Processing / Microtomy and Immunohistochemistry – within a joint service that operates across two sites. The successful candidate will work the core week shift (07:00‑18:00 Monday‑Friday) with a rotational Saturday rota (1:6). The department holds UKAS accreditation, IBMS training approval and a robust CPD programme.
Working Hours and Pattern
27 hours per week, Monday‑Friday 07:00‑18:00, with a 1:6 Saturday rota. Flexible within hours.
Responsibilities
* Work within the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.
* Perform unsupervised a range of automated, semi‑automated and manual techniques for the analysis of tissues and body fluids in accordance with SOPs.
* Maintain quality, accuracy and turnaround times in a busy environment.
* Follow standard operating procedures for all methods, ensuring equipment is used and maintained safely and in compliance with Health and Safety legislation.
* Supervise associate practitioners and healthcare support staff as required.
* Ensure technical correctness, accurate recording, interpretation and authorisation of test results.
* Initiate further actions on results showing variances from normal range.
* Organise own daily workload within the rostered section for efficient service delivery.
* Communicate with service users regarding investigations and results.
* Participate in internal and external audit activities and clinical audit activities.
* Contribute to discussions on technical and clinical issues, proposing practice changes where appropriate.
* Carry out method development and evaluation of tests as part of service development.
* Maintain internal quality control and external quality assurance procedures to required standards.
* Manage adequate stock levels and use resources efficiently.
* Liaise with central sort staff and other departments regarding pre‑analytical processing, shared equipment and sample use.
Qualifications
* IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Science.
* HCPC registration.
Experience
* Experience of working in an NHS laboratory (Essential).
* Experience of ICT packages – Word, Excel (Essential).
* Experience working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory (Desirable).
* Experience of quality management systems (Desirable).
Knowledge
* Knowledge of laboratory techniques and Biomedical Science.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and health safety measures.
* Manual dexterity for precision procedures.
* Familiarity with Lean principles (Desirable).
* Working knowledge of Pathology IT systems (Desirable).
