Purpose of the Role
Join Agratas – Pioneering the Future of Energy Storage
Job Title: Cathode Scientist – Li-ion Battery Cell (Applied Research)
Location: Oxford, UK
Department: Cell Technology / Applied Research
The Opportunity
Agratas, a Tata Group enterprise, is on a mission to power a cleaner, electrified future. As a Cathode Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of lithium-ion battery technology through cutting-edge research and development. Working within a world-class team, you’ll help deliver advanced cathode materials and electrode designs that drive performance, sustainability, and scalability for global EV and energy storage applications.
This is your chance to help build something that matters—from the ground up.
Key Responsibility Areas
* Cathode Technology Development: Research and exploit advanced cathode chemistries (e.g. high-Ni, LFP, low-Co/Co-free) for Li-ion cells that meet critical performance needs: energy density, safety, fast charging, and lifetime.
* Advanced Electrode Engineering: Use R&D tools to develop and optimise electrode architectures and processes, collaborating across materials, chemical, and electrochemical teams.
* Innovation & Next-Gen Research: Propose and evaluate next-generation cathode materials, contribute to technology roadmaps, assess IP opportunities, and ensure freedom to operate.
* Cross-Functional Collaboration: Lead and support multi-disciplinary R&D initiatives, contributing to new ‘Cell Concepts’ and future-ready technologies.
* Data-Driven Optimisation: Design and analyse structured experiments to optimise material performance, electrode processing and cost-effectiveness.
* Reporting & Documentation: Maintain comprehensive technical records and regularly report progress, insights, and project milestones.
Job Context
Your Background & Expertise
* Deep Expertise in Cathode Chemistry: Strong knowledge of cathode materials and their impact on lithium-ion performance at the cell level.
* Analytical Excellence: Proficiency in characterisation techniques (e.g. SEM, XRD, EIS) and electrochemical data interpretation.
* Industrial R&D Experience: Proven record of contributing to cathode innovations in a commercial or industrial setting.
* Collaborative Drive: A natural team player with excellent communication skills, capable of integrating across multiple functions and disciplines.
* Problem Solver: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex challenges and propose data-driven, scalable solutions.
* Learning Mindset: Passion for staying ahead of technological trends in battery materials and a continuous improvement ethos.
Qualifications
* PhD (or equivalent experience) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
* Relevant industrial experience in lithium-ion battery materials and electrode processing is strongly preferred.
