The role of the Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner is to support the delivery of evidenced based, equitable stop smoking services to help to reduce the inequalities throughout the contracted localities. This will include the delivery of services within areas of most deprivation. It is essential that the postholder can work flexibly, independently and as part of a team.
Main duties of the job
Motivates and empowers clients to make positive changes to address their addiction, providing clear information about nicotine dependence and the Stop Smoking Service to support informed decision-making. Delivers evidence-based smoking cessation interventions in accordance with the NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme, including one-to-one consultations, drop-in sessions, group support, telephone, and online services. Works collaboratively with healthcare professionals and partner organisations to embed smoking cessation into routine client care, maximising health outcomes and contributing to the reduction of health inequalities. Analyses health, equality, and service data to identify local needs and inform service development and delivery. Provides high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective services across a wide range of community settings. Leads peer support groups for successful quitters to help prevent relapse and delivers evidence-based education on smoking cessation, behavioural change, and ongoing motivational support. Supports individuals in setting realistic and sustainable goals, while ensuring all client and service records are maintained accurately, updated promptly, and managed in accordance with ABL Health documentation policies.

The postholder will be expected to analyse health, equality, and service data to identify local needs and inform service delivery, while maintaining a high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective service. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential, alongside the ability to engage and support diverse communities, manage competing priorities, and contribute positively to the ongoing development of the service. Experience in smoking cessation, addiction support, behavioural change, or a related field is desirable, and training will be provided to equip the successful candidate with the skills and knowledge required to deliver effective services.
