Water Design Engineer (Wastewater) Employment type: Permanent, full-time Location: Barnsley, South Yorkshire (hybrid ideally 2 days per week in the office) Hours: 8am-5:30pm Monday to Thursday, 8am-12pm Fridays Salary: £40,000 £55,000 p.a 26 days holiday ( Bank Holidays) An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Wastewater Design Engineer to join a forward-thinking civil engineering consultancy, delivering innovative foul and surface water solutions for clients in both the public and private sectors. In this role, you will take projects from early feasibility through to construction, producing adoptable and private drainage designs, hydraulic modelling, pumping and storage solutions, and compliance documentation for water authority approvals. Key Responsibilities: Produce drainage strategies, layouts, and detailed designs for foul and surface water networks, manholes, rising mains, CSOs, storage facilities, and pumping stations. Carry out hydraulic modelling, pipe sizing, runoff calculations (greenfield/brownfield, FEH/IoH), and prepare technical reports. Manage S104 and S106 submissions, liaising with stakeholders to achieve approvals. Create coordinated drawings and BIM models, including plans, long sections, details, and schedules. Develop attenuation and storage designs with provision for safe maintenance and operation. Specify installation techniques (e.g. open cut, HDD, pipe jacking) and address buildability considerations. Coordinate designs with highways, structures, process/MEICA, and landscaping disciplines. Prepare costed options and contribute to value-engineering exercises. Provide support during construction, responding to RFIs and carrying out compliance checks. Participate in HAZID, CDM design risk management, and quality assurance processes. Experience & Skills: HNC/HND or degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline). Minimum of 3 years UK wastewater or drainage design experience. Understanding of DCG (Design & Construction Guidance), BS EN 752, BS EN 1610, Building Regulations Part H, and water company adoption procedures. Competent user of AutoCAD, Civil 3D (or equivalent), and InfoDrainage/MicroDrainage or InfoWorks ICM. Ability to deliver high-quality plans, long sections, manhole schedules, and compliant specifications. Knowledge of hydrology, climate change allowances, exceedance routing, and flood risk principles. Familiarity with CDM 2015 requirements and design risk registers. Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Desirable: Experience working on water company frameworks (e.g. Yorkshire Water, Severn Trent, United Utilities). BIM coordination (Navisworks/Revit), trenchless design experience, and rebar detailing coordination. SuDS design knowledge (CIRIA C753) and GIS skills (QGIS/ArcGIS). Progress towards professional registration (IEng/CEng with ICE/CIWEM).
