Job Description

In this role you will prepare management reports, budgeting and analysis to support South Yorkshire Police with an overall view of performance for Business Units (BU). You will also provide strategic financial insights and collaborate with BU leaders to align financial strategies with business objectives.

You will support the budget setting and budget monitoring processes in accordance with corporate timetables and develop the accountancy function to contribute to overall Force financial objectives.

You will provide line management and day‑to‑day leadership and support to a team of Finance Officers.


Key Responsibilities

* Budget Setting: Lead the budget setting process and provide clear direction to Finance Officers.
* Budget Monitoring: Lead and coordinate the month‑end processes, monitor key monthly procedures (virement reconciliations, contingencies, central reports), prepare high‑quality monthly budget monitoring reports for SCT, produce reports such as JIAC, coordinate non‑statutory returns, guide the monthly workforce plan reconciliation, and ensure compliance with corporate policies.
* KPIs: Update and monitor key performance indicators for the team, review performance, address discrepancies and support the team to meet deadlines.
* SPOC for Ad‑hoc Requests: Act as the single point of contact for ad‑hoc requests, including Freedom of Information, and coordinate provision of information.
* System Control: Champion business intelligence for management accounting, support development of financial reports, contribute to system implementation, and coordinate UAT testing.
* Continuous Improvement: Take personal responsibility for continuous improvement and lead project work within the area.
* Line Management: Lead, manage and develop staff, foster a high‑performance culture, conduct performance management, and deputise for the Senior Management Accountant when required.


Skills and Experience

* Qualified C.C.A.B. or CIMA accountant with full membership.
* Significant recent management accounting experience.
* Up‑to‑date with current accounting issues and strong practical accounting knowledge.
* IT literacy with advanced Excel skills and experience with large, complex ERP systems.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* Experience building relationships with senior managers and budget holders.
* Commitment to personal and professional development.
* Strong analytical skills.
* Ability to work in a highly pressurised environment.
* Experience leading a team and staff management.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the minimum 5‑year checkable history requirement and successfully complete the recruitment vetting procedure.
