Role Overview

Our Healthcare Support Worker will work as part of our nursing team providing personal nursing care and clinical interventions to patients in the inpatient hospital care setting. They may contribute to the assessment of care needs and the delivery of planned care under delegation and direction of the Registered Nurse. This includes recording and documenting physiological observations and changes to the patient's clinical condition. The role supports patients in accordance with Trust standards and policies, providing direct patient‑centred care, personal care, oral care and continence support, promoting independence.


Responsibilities

* Provide direct patient centred care in accordance with patient needs and Trust policies, including personal care, oral care and continence support.
* Establish and maintain good interpersonal skills, deliver and receive factual information, and overcome communication barriers using methods such as visual prompts, reassurance, empathy and persuasion.
* Undertake training to perform high‑quality clinical interventions effectively and demonstrate competence, e.g., clinical observations, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, venepuncture, urinary catheter removal, peripheral cannula insertion/removal, ECG performance, BMI calculation, following assessment and completion of clinical competency. Additional interventions may be required depending on the area of practice.
* Assess a person’s clinical condition within the scope of competence using tools such as NEWS2 parameters, pain assessment tools, and non‑verbal signs of deterioration, and know how to urgently Escalate concerns appropriately.
* Work independently or as part of a team to plan workload, prioritising the clinical needs of patients in care.

Qualifications and Experience

* NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience.
* Care Certificate.
* English & Mathematics at GSCE grade A–C (9–4) or level 2 functional skills.
* Previous experience in a care environment or ability to demonstrate a caring nature/life experience.
* Understanding of strict confidentiality requirements.
* Working knowledge of complex care needs, including safeguarding children & adults, domestic abuse and mental health.


Specific Skills

* Basic computer/keyboard skills.
* Fine motor skills for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills.
* Able to prioritise and organise work.
* Able to work under instruction, under pressure and as part of a team.
* Record‑keeping competency in handwritten and electronic records.
* Able to demonstrate empathy, sensitivity and adapt communication style to circumstances.
* Able to manage stress in self and others.
* Able to offer support at times of emotional distress.
* Willingness to undertake new skills and training.
* Able to work as a team member or independently.
* Ability to adapt behaviour to changing and challenging situations.
* Flexibility, adaptability, reliability and punctuality.
