Job overview

We have a new vacancy for a diagnostic radiology (DR) physicist within the Radiological Sciences Unit of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT), due to the expansion of our team. This role provides support to senior physicists including those certificated as RPAs and MPEs, whilst building on the experience gained through training.

The successful applicants will work in a helpful, friendly and dynamic team, delivering scientific advice and technical support in diagnostic radiology and radiation safety to ICHNT and external organisations.

The position offers excellent opportunities for learning and developing skills, and will broaden your experience across all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Safety. Ideally, you will have working experience in some or all of the areas of quality assurance and radiation safety, and will be a clinical scientist registered with HCPC.

Candidates with less experience (currently training in the Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection specialism or working towards HCPC registration via route 2) are encouraged to apply as training and support will be available (subject to an amended job description and salary band).

Main duties of the job

1. To provide scientific and technical expertise in Radiological Physics to the Trust and other organisations, in line with service requirements.
2. To contribute to the provision of Service Level Agreements with other Trusts and external organisations in line with the policies of the Radiological Sciences Unit and the Imaging Directorate.
3. The post holder will be a healthcare scientist in DR with the ability to provide scientific and technical expertise.
4. The role will include quality assurance, trouble-shooting and radiation safety work on a range of manufacturers’ equipment and some teaching and training to radiographic staff and trainees.

Education

Essential criteria

5. Honours degree in a relevant subject
6. MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent
7. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or ability to achieve this within a reasonable timescale

Desirable criteria

8. Successful completion of Scientist Training Programme in Medical Physics, or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

9. Relevant experience in radiation safety applied to use of ionising radiation in medicine and of diagnostic radiology physics
10. Experience in DR quality assurance (able to test a wide range of diagnostic x-ray imaging equipment - simple to mid-range systems independently, more complex systems with supervision.
11. Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from radiation exposure and of the image quality requirements for a range of diagnostic imaging procedures
12. Some experience of working in a clinical environment

Desirable criteria

13. Working towards MPE accreditation

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria

14. In-depth specialist knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines
15. Ability to interpret and apply such relevant guidance and legislation
16. Proficient with Microsoft Office (specifically Word & Excel); able to set up databases and spreadsheets and extract information
17. Able to work independently providing specialist advice to the Trust

Desirable criteria

18. Experience of computer programming e.g. ImageJ.
19. Statistical analysis techniques
20. Good communication of complex physics to staff with a range of backgrounds
