The Role:
Our Prevention and Turnaround Officers work with children aged 10 to 17 who are at risk of offending and have not been to court. If a young person has been involved with the police at a low level, our Prevention and Turnaround service aims to deter them from developing patterns of persistent and more serious offending in the future.
We have two roles available, one in the West of Hampshire with office bases in Basingstoke, Andover, Eastleigh and the New Forest, and one in the East of Hampshire with office bases in Fareham, Havant and Aldershot.
What you’ll do:
Assessment and Care Planning
* Use professional skills, knowledge, and experience and a range of interpersonal and specialist communication skills to gather information and make a full assessment of risks protection and social care needs of individuals and carers/families, within relevant legal and statutory frameworks, agreed priorities and current eligibility criteria.
* Ensure the ‘voice of the child’ is heard through the intervention.
* Understand the context of child development, parenting capacity and family and environmental factors, to assess the risks/needs presented by an individual child or young person and identify how they may be reduced (balancing risk and protective factors).
* Refer to other relevant agencies and undertake joint assessments where appropriate to ensure all risks and needs are considered.
* Take appropriate action in conjunction with other agencies and within legal and statutory framework, to protect vulnerable people.
* Devise individual intervention plans based on assessed needs and risks that take account of diversity to maintain and improve their quality of life.
* Intervention plans should promote dignity and empowerment and comply with legal and statutory requirements.
Case Management
* Manage an agreed case load in accordance with statutory and departmental procedures and objectives, and professional good practice to enable individuals to achieve goals and maximise their strengths.
* Offer support and guidance and work in a professional manner with clients, carers and families to establish mutual trust and understanding and ensure services provided meet identified needs.
* Monitor, review and reassess interventions/services against identified risks, needs, and objectives to ensure the continued effectiveness in achieving required or wanted outcomes.
* Make appropriate use of paper and computerised case recording systems to effectively contribute to professional case management and comply with current legislation and departmental policies and procedures. Records should be accessible to individuals, colleagues and managers as appropriate.
* Within the bounds of confidentiality and appropriate consent, communicate effectively with individuals and agencies using a variety of methods to keep them appropriately informed and involved.
* When required, attend Child Protection, Child in Need and Children Looked After meetings, as well as Risk/Vulnerability/Intervention Planning Meetings to provide information and contribute to decision making.
Service Development
* Participate in training and continuous personal development and achieve appropriate in-service qualifications to be proficient in role.
* Work co-operatively with other agencies and stakeholders and contribute to forums/projects to develop partnerships and services which are responsive to identified needs.
* Collate information regarding service gaps, quality etc. to inform surveys and development initiatives.
* Work within corporate and statutory frameworks such as, antidiscrimination/health and safety/sustainability and demonstrate commitment to them in daily working practice.
* Understand the processes of discrimination and oppression at individual, cultural and structural levels and challenge them appropriately.
* Participate in peer supervision/reflective practice.
* Maintain a current understanding of the duty to cooperate in relation to SEND principles and practice.
What we’re looking for:
You will have GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, with IT and communication skills, and extensive experience building effective relationships, delivering assessments, interventions, and reports for children, young people, and families; including those facing vulnerability, trauma, or complex behaviours. Your skills will include risk assessment, negotiation, mediation, multi‑disciplinary collaboration, and applying knowledge of child development, safeguarding, equality, and data protection to practice.
You may also have experience or interest in areas such as youth justice, court work, group work, understanding social disadvantage and SEND, and a commitment to ongoing learning and development.
