Job Description:
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
As a member of the Systems Engineering and Administration team, the incumbent performs intermediate to advanced systems engineering and administration duties supporting cloud-based, hybrid, and on‑premise enterprise environments. Responsibilities include Microsoft 365 (Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams), Windows Server, Linux Server, SQL Server, Intune, SCCM, endpoint security, vulnerability management, backup and recovery systems, monitoring, automation, and incident response. The position supports Zero Trust security principles and provides responsive, customer-focused IT services. Minimum Qualifications:
1. Extensive knowledge of enterprise Windows Server, Linux Servers, administration and troubleshooting in hybrid environments.
2. Strong understanding of identity and access management concepts (directory services, authentication, authorization, MFA, least privilege).
3. Experience with virtualization platforms and management of virtual compute workloads (capacity, availability, patching, lifecycle).
4. Experience with enterprise storage technologies (SAN/NAS concepts, iSCSI/fiber channel where applicable, tiering, replication, and performance tuning).
5. Experience with backup/restore operations, retention policies, recovery testing, and disaster recovery planning/execution.
6. Working knowledge of TCP/IP networking, DNS/DHCP, routing/switching concepts, and how systems dependencies affect service health.
7. Ability to design, implement, and maintain monitoring/alerting, logging, and operational dashboards to support service reliability.
8. Ability to script/automate routine administration (e.g., PowerShell) and create repeatable operational runbooks.
9. Strong verbal/written communication skills; ability to document technical decisions and communicate outages/risks clearly to stakeholders.
10. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow change management and security processes.
11. Availability for occasional after-hours/weekend maintenance and incident response as required.
12. Experience in computer science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a closely related field or equivalent demonstrated professional experience in enterprise systems administration.
13. Industry-recognized certifications or equivalent demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:Microsoft (Azure, Microsoft 365, Windows Server), Linux Servers, networking fundamentals (e.g., Network+), identity and access management, or systems administration.
14. Extensive experience administering and supporting Windows Server–based enterprise environments, including hybrid (on premises and cloud-integrated) infrastructure in a large campus or enterprise WAN/LAN environment.
15. Experience installing, configuring, and supporting server hardware and server operating systems, including virtualization platforms and lifecycle management (patching, upgrades, capacity planning).
16. Experience administering Microsoft 365 services, such as Entra ID (Azure AD), Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, and related collaboration and messaging platforms. (Required)
17. Working experience with identity, security, and endpoint management technologies, including MFA, conditional access, Intune, SCCM, endpoint protection, vulnerability management, and Zero Trust security principles.
18. Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions, including recovery testing, retention policies, and incident response support.
Additional Considerations:
19. Relevant industry certifications or demonstrated equivalent experience in systems engineering, security, cloud, virtualization, or backup technologies.
20. Experience installing, configuring, and supporting web servers and web-enabled applications, including IIS and SQL Server administration in enterprise environments.
21. Experience supporting heterogeneous environments, including macOS, Linux, and mobile platforms, as well as scripting or automation (e.g., PowerShell) to improve operational efficiency.
22. Formal training or advanced certifications in Microsoft, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, virtualization, or enterprise infrastructure technologies.
