Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals to further develop their CV in this Clinical Fellow (ST3/4) post and join a team of dynamic clinicians delivering care in state‑of‑the‑art facilities. This post will commence from 5th August 2026 in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (default expectation is 50:50 split). These posts have 20% fully remunerated protected time allocated to them for personal professional development. This post is for a 48 hour contract.
Southmead Hospital is a busy tertiary centre for many surgical and medical services as well as one of 2 major trauma centres in the Southwest of England. Candidates will have the opportunity to experience training in these tertiary specialties as part of the anaesthetic and/or ICU teams.
We welcome applications from both anaesthetic and non‑anaesthetic resident doctors. The post will be of interest to any anaesthetist who has finished core/stage 1 training and is currently working towards completing stage 1 or in preparation for ST4 applications, including primary exam preparation. Stage 2 competencies can be supported during this post for up to 1 year. It would also be suitable for Medicine/EM trainees (or dual with ICM), at a similar stage in their careers, who wish to apply for ICM‑only posts.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
* Anaesthesia and ICM fellowship: time split between specialties negotiable
* Trauma fellowship: includes experience in a busy trauma ICU, working with the trauma team in ED and trauma theatres. (Regional anaesthesia is widely practiced).
* ICM‑only fellowship (applications from non‑anaesthetists welcomed)
One day per week will be for professional development and we have opportunities for contributions to research, audit, QI and service development, teaching, and simulation. One post is badged to the STAR research group. During the ICM posts candidates who have undertaking a FICE or FUSIC courses can be supported to complete the requirements for FUSIC Module completion e.g. heart.
This activity will be clinically supervised by a consultant.
Person Specification
Education / Training / Qualifications - Essential Criteria
* MB BS (or equivalent)
* Full and unrestricted registration with GMC
* FFICM or FRCA or equivalent or appropriate diploma relevant to postgraduate training
Desirable Criteria
* Prizes
* Higher degree
* Accreditation in Intensive Care
* ALS/ATLS provider status (or equivalent)
Work Experience - Essential Criteria
* Experience of Critical Care in relevant sub‑specialties to NBT.
* Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices.
* At least 4 years’ experience an acute specialty appropriate to ICU with recognised postgraduate experience in an approved training post or posts offering equivalent responsibility and training.
Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of extensive experience in sub‑specialties reflected in the job description.
* Intermediate or advanced training in ICM.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities - Essential Criteria
* Competent in Intensive Care at Senior Fellow level.
* Accepts responsibility and able to take leadership role.
* Significant demonstration of interest in research.
* Evidence of recent CPD and progress through training at a rate appropriate to seniority and responsibilities of the post.
Desirable Criteria
* Papers published in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Good Clinical Practice certification within last 3 years.
* Experience in presenting research at local, national and international meetings.
* Experience of application for study grants.
* Contribution to national and international guidelines.
Personal Qualities - Essential Criteria
* Ability to fulfil all of the duties of the post including acute on‑call commitments, evening and weekend working.
* Fluent in English (IELTS Level 7 or equivalent).
* Mobility and dexterity compatible with clinical requirements of the post.
