Role Purpose Digital, Data and Technology are responsible for transforming and supporting all of the force's digital technology needs. Within Operations, the Networks and Communications team provide technical excellence across network, cyber security and communications. The team is responsible for ensuring the security, integrity, availability and performance of all the force network and communication infrastructure which includes; - The Airwave infrastructure, comprising of covert and overt end-user devices, Integrated Communications Control System (ICCS), fleet mapping and coverage. - The Network infrastructure, comprising of Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and Wireless networks. - The Firewall and Proxies to facilitate access to the internet, Police PSN and LECN - The voice and video infrastructure, comprising of Voice Over IP (VOIP) and Video Conferencing. - Supporting the implementation of new network infrastructure to Architectural High Level Designs (HLD) - Supporting all Business As Usual (BAU) activities comprising of upgrades, patching, creation of Low Level Designs (LLD), support calls and break fix. The Network Engineer (Associate) is responsible supporting the force network infrastructure and installing cabling changes or configuration changes in line with broader programmes of work. Routine monitoring and maintenance of the network infrastructure, and support for equipment deployment and installation. Key Tasks, Accountabilities and Responsibilities: Key Tasks: Provide specialist 2nd line technical skills and knowledge that facilitates the provision, configuration and support of force networks, whilst maintaining security, availability, capability, and performance Support the delivery of solutions in response to incident, configuration, availability, capacity, continuity, and release management in line with agreed procedures. Assist with relevant incident, configuration, availability, capacity, continuity and release management activities in line with the ITIL framework Assist Cyber and Security teams in the enforcement of best practice security posture. Facilitate network BAU, patching, upgrades and new installation activities Monitor network performance and availability. Assist in the resolution and implementation of major incidents, major changes, and major releases. Provide specialist knowledge in a variety of networking technologies Liaise with users when required to ensure their network access expectations are met. Ensure the currency of network device firmware/OS (adopting an ‘n-1’ model where possible). Provide technical assistance to projects which may often be complex in nature, ensuring solutions meet the required quality levels and that information and/or advice is offered to assist senior colleagues and the wider DDaT team in making appropriate decisions. Attend force user groups as necessary, to understand user requirements in terms of the future development and roadmap for applications. Manage incidents and service requests to meet the needs of the force and make best use of the resources available. Champion good ideas to management. Support and assist other technical roles (e.g. 1st Line, EUC) in their development and some matrix management of other technical disciplines where required. Contribute and share information with senior internal and external stakeholders where appropriate. Provided technical input into the teams longer term plans. Key Accountabilities: Provide technical support in all Firewall, Router, Switch, Wifi, Load Balancing and VPN technologies Support of the design, build, test, deployment, analysis, administration, monitoring and maintenance of all network infrastructure as prescribed by architectural patterns. Manage the security, availability, capability, and performance of all networking infrastructure Ensure that security regulations and policies are adhered too. Key Responsibilities: As part of the network team, support of all force network infrastructure over a 24/7 365 environment. Participate in an on-call rota as required. Be able to travel offsite to attend disaster recovery site if required. Assist wider IT teams in diagnosing, resolving and documenting issues.
