Job overview
The Headteacher and Trustees wish to appoint a Deputy Headteacher to join our outstanding school on a full time basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to join our Senior Leadership Team and we welcome applications from individuals who feel they meet the role criteria.
We are very much a family and a team at NGHS; our colleagues work exceptionally hard to help each student to achieve their potential and they also support each other. We take staff well-being extremely seriously and our Well-being Charter is included in our application pack to show you what we do.
NGHS is an outstanding girls' grammar school. We were most recently inspected by Ofsted in November 2022 and the school was judged outstanding in every category, placing us in the top 3% of schools. Please read the report here; you will see why we are so proud of our staff and students. We are also the 2020 West Midlands Secondary School of the Year and have recently won a number of accolades rewarding our work in supporting Mental Health, Holocaust Education, the Be Kind Award and the AcSEED Award.
Our trustee board is incredibly supportive and experienced. Their drive and ambition for the school keeps us on our toes, but they are passionate about enhancing opportunities for all students. We are heavily oversubscribed and hold an annual entrance test. We have, on average, 120 girls in each year group. The sixth form is also oversubscribed and we take students from a number of 11-16 and 11-18 high schools as well, of course, as our own Year 11s.

About Newport Girls' High School
port Girls' High School
Wellington Road, Newport
Shropshire
TF10 7HL
United Kingdom
port Girls' High School is a selective grammar school for girls aged 11 to 18, situated in the historic market town of Newport, Shropshire.
With around 900 pupils, the school has built a strong reputation for academic excellence and personal development. Admission to Year 7 is through the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test, and the school remains consistently oversubscribed, attracting applicants from a wide geographical area including Newport, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Market Drayton, and surrounding villages. Approximately 40% of students live in Newport itself.
In 2019, the school secured £2.3 million through the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund, enabling a significant increase in its intake from 2021. An ambitious building programme followed, resulting in the opening of new facilities in January 2022, including a dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite, and four additional classrooms. These improvements have supported the school's growing population and enhanced the learning environment.
The school converted to academy status in 2012 and now operates independently under its own trust. Its sixth form, known as NGHS6, is open to both internal and external applicants and offers a broad curriculum alongside extensive enrichment opportunities and strong pastoral care. Sixth form students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and contribute actively to the wider school community. NGHS6 is the only sixth form in the region to be rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in every category.
The school day runs from 8:50am to 3:45pm, allowing time for daily assemblies and extended breaks. A wide range of extra-curricular activities is available, including sports such as fencing, netball, hockey, and karate, helping students to develop confidence, teamwork, and resilience beyond the classroom.
In its most recent Ofsted inspection in November 2022, Newport Girls' High School was rated 'Outstanding' across all categories. Inspectors praised the school's ambitious approach to teaching, particularly for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and noted that students quickly develop exceptionally positive learning behaviours. Lessons are calm, focused, and free from disruption.
The school is led by Headteacher Mr Adam Jones, under his leadership, NGHS continues to thrive, combining tradition with innovation to ensure that every student is supported to achieve their full potential.
