Senior Child Protection Social Worker - Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton Council are seeking an experienced Senior Child Protection Social Worker / Lead Practitioner to join their high-performing safeguarding service. This is a specialist role managing high-risk unborns, PLO and court work, S47/CP plans and supporting children within the disabilities team.
This is a challenging and rewarding position, requiring resilient, confident and tenacious practitioners with a deep understanding of thresholds and the ability to apply and challenge them appropriately.
About the Role
As a Lead Child Protection Practitioner, you will act as a recognised expert in the field of child protection, holding a caseload of high-risk and complex situations involving children at risk of significant harm.
You will co-work with and support less experienced social workers, provide expert consultation to multi-agency partners, and play a key role in decision-making during safeguarding processes. You will lead on Section 47 enquiries, children subject to child protection plans, and pre-proceedings work as part of an allocated caseload.
Key Responsibilities
Hold and manage a complex child protection caseload, including high-risk unborns, PLO and court work
Provide expert advice and consultation across the multi-agency partnership to support effective safeguarding
Undertake and lead Section 47 enquiries, pre-proceedings, and child protection plans
Co-work with and mentor less experienced social workers, supporting proportionate and timely decision-making
Deliver high-quality assessments and court reports, child protection case conference reports, and statutory reviews within required timescales
Chair child protection core groups and contribute to multi-agency forums to safeguard children and young people
Maintain accurate and timely case recording in line with local and national guidance
Requirements
Qualified Social Worker with Social Work England registration
Significant experience within Child Protection / Court / PLO / Pre-Birth / S47 work
Demonstrable expertise in threshold application and decision-making in high-risk cases
Strong analytical, communication and leadership skills
Ability to mentor and support less experienced practitioners and make sound safeguarding decisions
