Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced cardiology nurse to work within cardiology services across both South Tyneside and Sunderland Royal Hospital sites. This dynamic nurse will work within the well-established Cardiology team leading the management and care delivery for patients being admitted to our chest pain assessment unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital and accessing services at our South Tyneside hospital. The CNP role will consist of providing expert clinical knowledge to patients with cardiology conditions. They will be a requirement to contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of nurse-led service for patients.
The post holder will join the team in delivering a 24/7 service with rotational day and night duties. It is expected that the post holder will have sound cardiology knowledge and skills in managing patients in the acute setting, including those requiring PPCI and with unstable coronary disease.
Main duties of the job
* Coordinate the delivery and development of the chest pain service through effective evidence-based practice in line with national standards.
* Work closely with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals within the Trust to facilitate prompt, evidence-based treatment of patients with chest pain.
* Triages patients, prioritising clinical need and highlighting those requiring immediate intervention.
* Work autonomously, admitting and clerking appropriate emergency/chest pain admissions, assessing needs, undertaking investigations, and initiating treatment.
* Make autonomous decisions regarding patient admission or discharge within protocols and arrange outpatient appointments for discharged patients under nurse-led protocols.
* Support the Emergency Department with assessment and management of suspected cardiac chest pain and activate PPCI pathways as appropriate.
* Contribute to multidisciplinary, patient-centred care organization.
* Plan and deliver safe, effective, and compassionate patient care within Cardiology pathways, working autonomously.
* Provide specialist clinical advice and support on assessment, management, and care of cardiology patients.
* Continuously improve clinical care standards and ensure effective communication internally and externally.
* Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.
* Represent the service nationally and contribute to audit and research activities.
* Undertake nurse-led elective cardioversion and emergency cardioversion, including informed consent.
* Participate in post-take ward rounds and contribute to a 24/7 service, including rotation shifts.
* Support the cardiology nursing team in delivering direct patient care and escalate concerns appropriately.
Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential)
* Registered Nurse with UK registration.
* Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree.
* Mentorship certificate or equivalent experience.
* Cardiology qualifications and non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
Skills & Knowledge (Essential)
* Knowledge of national health policies and best practices in cardiology.
* Excellent clinical and IT skills, including venepuncture and cannulation.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* ECG interpretation and cardiology anatomy and physiology knowledge.
Experience (Essential)
* Experience in care delivery and acute cardiology.
* Leadership/support experience with junior staff.
* Experience in practice development and innovation.
Physical Skills
* Ability to assist patient movement and travel across sites.
Additional Requirements
* Clearance for DBS check.
* Current UK professional registration.
