Overview
Nomad has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Hardware Development Engineer to join our global Product Management division in Hildesheim, Germany.
In coordination with the Connectivity Product Manager and the Head of On‑Train Systems, you will be responsible for defining and managing the product vision, strategy, and roadmap. You will function as the bridge between business stakeholders, customers, and our internal teams to ensure delivery of high‑quality, competitive, and innovative networking solutions.
This role will be based in our office in Hildesheim, Germany, with a hybrid working arrangement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Nomad Digital is the world leader in broadband communications to public transport. Our offerings to rolling‑stock manufacturers, vehicle owners and operators fall naturally into three categories: Core Networking Solutions, Passenger Facing Solutions, and Operational Solutions.
The main responsibilities for the person taking on this role are:
* In collaboration with the Head of On‑Train Systems and the Connectivity Product Manager help to define the HW strategy in alignment with the 3‑year planned roadmap, taking into consideration the product lifecycle, technological evolution and release of new relevant standards and regulations.
* Redact technical specification documentation for new or replacement end‑of‑life HW to be sent to external HW suppliers.
* Follow‑up the market, our competitors and HW suppliers’ product roadmap – identifying potential solutions that line up with projects or broader internal roadmap strategy.
* Gather inputs from customers, sales & service teams and other partners to identify new significant requirements to be considered in the roadmap planning.
* Manage the product backlog and prioritise the backlog items according to the broader project and development priorities.
* Provide technical support to supplier selection & evaluation (competencies & capability) together with the procurement and quality teams.
* Cooperate with the Head of Rail Engineering Compliance to ensure products meet security, regulatory, and environmental compliance standards.
* Perform detailed inspections of initial production samples as part of Nomad Digital’s First Article Inspection (FAI) to ensure they meet all design, quality, and performance specifications.
* Deliver and maintain detailed documentation of all testing procedures, results, and FAI reports.
* Develop the necessary test plans for the hardware products: functional, performance & stress testing, new features, etc. Plan and/or execute the tests in line with the plan.
The Hardware Development Engineer role will be internally visible and has the following interactions:
* With the Head of On‑Train Systems and the Connectivity Product Manager: review roadmap, planning, EOL risks and test results.
* With the Bid and Sales teams, present new solutions and provide documentation. Support for tenders: review requirements, validate the solution design and identify potential gaps in our offering.
* With the development team: gather integration information about new products and features. Improve Nomad software integration, in particular management and monitoring tools.
* With the Hardware Integration team: plan FW and HW testing and review test results.
* With the QHSE teams: certification and regulation updates review and planning of tests.
* With the engineering and DevOps team: support and review design of complex architectures. Provide expert (level 3) support if complex issues are encountered.
* With the Procurement team: exchange information on third‑party products and support them with any technical discussions.
* With OEM suppliers: interact with their Engineering staff at any moment of the product onboarding process or if defects or issues arise or to obtain product information pertinent to the testing of their products.
* With the Service and Engineering teams worldwide: obtain feedback on performance and circulate technical information.
In addition, the role requires an ongoing awareness, through press and industry sources, of trends in equipment functionality or standards that Nomad should respond to.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related fields.
* Qualified in networking to a formal qualification CCNA, CCDP, CCNP, WSCTA or equivalent.
* Qualification in network security and/or ethical hacking would be an advantage.
Experience
Required know‑how
* Solid understanding of Ethernet switching and routing (L2/L3), VLANs, STP, PoE, QoS, multicast, etc.
* Knowledge of Wi‑Fi standards (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax), RF fundamentals, and wireless security.
* Familiarity with network management platforms, cloud‑managed networking, and SDN concepts.
* A basic understanding of electronic design techniques, as well as electronics production, to a level that enables the review of specific design requirements and the evaluation of product quality in accordance with IPC standards.
Required experience
* 3–5+ years of experience in Product Management, Product Owner, or Engineering role within networking/IT infrastructure and with Network Hardware – Switches, Routers and Access Points.
* Experience setting up office LAN/WAN end‑to‑end, including security considerations, segregation services on VLANs L3 routing, iptables/firewalls, net filtering, logging, proxy server and VPN.
* Extensive experience configuring and managing network devices from multiple vendors.
* Experience in the configuration of Wi‑Fi access points/client bridges, Ethernet switches and routers.
* Experience working in a Linux environment. Knowledge of Linux OpenWRT distribution is a real advantage.
* Experience of network monitoring and management tools used to capture and analyse performance and behaviour e.g. Wireshark.
* Design specification experience for Hardware products.
Other Ideal Experiences
* Experience working in the Railway industry.
* Knowledge about Railway Standards.
* Knowledge and experience working with the standards used for vehicular communication (CAN, IBIS, MVB).
* Experience with RF designs.
* Experience working with Atlassian JIRA.
Other Essential Requirements
* Good English language both written and verbal.
* Experience using Microsoft Office products.
* Travel Required: Yes but only occasionally
* Good problem‑solving capabilities with a methodical repeatable approach.
* Able to manage and prioritise workload using your own initiative.
* Excellent communication skills and a willingness to provide knowledge to the wider team.
* Will adhere to work existing work processes and follow ISO9001 quality standards.
