About the role
At SP Energy Networks, our focus is on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. We are building a dynamic network to meet the changing demands for electricity and increasingly renewable electricity – safely, securely and sustainably in the communities we serve.
The Control Room manages the distribution network for 1.5 million customers across the SPM licence for Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. It is responsible for both Planned and Fault work and delivering excellent Customer Service.
As SPEN transitions to become a DSO, this role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of our future distribution network strategy, ensuring exceptional customer, network security and access for flexible energy resources.
Training Programme
As a trainee control person you will follow a training programme specifically designed to develop the skills required to become a distribution control engineer. This will involve training in the control and operation of the SP Energy Networks distribution electrical networks under normal, outage and fault situations.
Once fully trained & authorised as a Control Engineer you will have the opportunity to join the 24/7 Control room team.
What you'll be doing
* Learning how the distribution network is operated in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with Operational Procedures and Safety Rules.
* Gaining acknowledgement of how all outage and network access requests are managed ensuring risk to network and system security is minimised.
* Developing customer service and operational liaison skills with internal/external third parties for all network activities.
* Gaining a detailed knowledge of Energy Networks policies, procedures and working practices.
* Learning about health, safety and environmental legislation.
* Developing a full understanding of transmission and/or distribution SCADA Systems.
* Receiving training on Company emergency plans and escalation trigger points.
* Reviewing and investigating system performance following major incidents and faults.

* Ability to form strong working relationships across all EN business areas and at all levels.
* Ability in dealing with major customers.
* A proven aptitude for using and developing new IT solutions.
* Ability to co‑ordinate a broad range of complex tasks and requirements from different business areas and devise solutions.
* Takes responsibility and accountability for tasks and activities and contributes to the achievement of team goals by providing support, advice, encouragement and clear direction and coaching when appropriate.
* Ability to define and document new processes for key strategic changes within the Control Room.
* Effective decision maker not inhibited by consultation with others when necessary or give lead as required.
To be successful in a role you will need to demonstrate as a minimum:
* HNC with relevant experience or degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering would be preferable.
* Detailed distribution and/or network knowledge essential.
* Hands‑on operational experience required, authorised to a minimum of APSP at LV.
* Positive and flexible individual with drive to succeed.
* Able to work as part of a skilled and motivated team.
* Excellent communication skills with individuals at all levels.
* Caring individual with strong customer service values.
