Job Summary:
The Electrical Panel Builder is responsible for the assembly, wiring, and testing of electrical control panels, and associated cable looms in accordance with electrical drawings, specifications, and relevant standards. The role requires a high level of workmanship, strict adherence to health and safety procedures, and compliance with ESD control measures when handling electrostatic sensitive devices (ESDs).
Key Responsibilities:
Assemble and wire electrical control panels in accordance with schematic diagrams, wiring schedules, and layout drawings
Assemble cable looms and wiring harnesses to drawings and build specifications, including:
Cutting, stripping, crimping, and terminating cables
Correct identification, labelling, and bundling of looms
Loom dressing to maintain mechanical integrity and neatness
Install electrical and electronic components including MCCBs, printed circuit boards, power supplies, IGBTs, and instrumentation
Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, general arrangement drawings, and cable schedules
Handle and install Electrostatic Sensitive Devices (ESDs) in accordance with company ESD procedures, including the use of ESD wrist straps, mats, and grounded workstations
Perform basic electrical testing such as continuity checks, insulation resistance testing, and functional checks where authorised
Identify and rectify wiring or loom assembly faults and highlight drawing discrepancies or component issues
Ensure all panels and looms are manufactured in accordance with relevant standards such as BS EN 61439, BS 7671 (where applicable), and internal quality procedures
Maintain a clean, safe, and ESD-controlled working environment in line with health and safety requirements
Work to production schedules and quality standards to meet delivery deadlines
Complete build records, inspection sheets, test results, and quality documentation accurately
Skills & Experience:
Essential:
Proven experience in electrical panel building and/or cable loom assembly
Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules
Competence in crimping, terminating, and assembling cable looms to a high standard
High attention to detail and pride in workmanship
Desirable:
Apprenticeship or NVQ Level 2/3 in Electrical Engineering
Experience with PLC-based control panels and power electronics
Understanding of safe handling and installation of ESD-sensitive electronic components
Familiarity with BS EN 61439 panel standards
CSCS card or similar H&S Course Certificate(s)
Familiarity/Qualification operating electric pallet stacker
