Data Engineer WMF2268e
Job description
Location: Agile with some office-based work required
Contract Type: Permanent
About this opportunity
At Westmorland and Furness Council, we're ambitious about the future. We want to harness the power of data to transform how we deliver services, support our communities, and shape a better future for everyone.
We're investing in our Data and Insight Team, a forward-thinking group that champions innovation and continuous improvement. As a Data Engineer, you'll be at the heart of this journey — working with Microsoft Fabric to build and optimise our data infrastructure. Your expertise will drive the delivery of our single enterprise data model and bring our corporate Data Strategy to life.
This role is about more than data pipelines and architecture — it's about enabling smarter decisions, better outcomes, and real impact across our communities. You'll have the chance to contribute to meaningful projects, collaborate with passionate colleagues, and help us push the boundaries of what's possible in local government.
Who we are looking for…
We want someone who is not just technically skilled, but curious, innovative, and excited about using data to make a difference.
You should bring:
* Experience in designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure for efficient collection, storage, and processing
* Knowledge of data modelling and architecture, ideally with experience of supporting enterprise-level data models
* Hands-on expertise with ETL processes and pipeline orchestration, ideally using Azure Data Factory
* Ability to integrate data from multiple sources including internal systems, open data, and third-party APIs
* Experience in creating and managing data warehouses to support analysis, reporting, and performance optimisation
* An understanding of data tools for governance, AI, and reporting integration
* Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, actionable insights
Experience in the public sector within a transformational data role would be an advantage, but it's not essential. What matters most is your ability to bring ideas to the table, solve problems creatively, and work as part of a team that thrives on innovation.
