Offer description

Mechanical Maintenance Technician (Preventative Team)

We’re excited to launch a new Wastewater Screens and Sewage Pumping Station Preventative Maintenance Team at Northumbrian Water, and we’re looking for skilled Mechanical Technicians to be part of this forward‑thinking initiative. Based from our Seaham, County Durham facility, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and improving the performance of our assets across the North East.

This is a unique opportunity to join a newly formed team focused on proactive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and condition‑based servicing of Screens and SPS assets. You’ll help reduce downtime and improve plant availability, making a real impact on operational reliability.

What Makes This Role Different?

* No Regular Standby Rota: This role is not part of the standard out‑of‑hours standby rota. However, we value flexibility and welcome individuals who are willing to support in exceptional circumstances.
* Mobile Role – You’ll be equipped with a company van and tools, with the flexibility to start and end your day from home when work demands allow.
* Specialist Development – Once qualified you can complete up to three additional technical modules, each rewarded with a £1,500 payment. There is an expectation that you can achieve a minimum of two modules within three years.
* Diverse Equipment Exposure – Our wide range of assets offers a unique chance to specialise in areas such as condition‑based maintenance and preventative diagnostics.

About You

You will be a time‑served Mechanical Technician educated to at least ONC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering. You will have a maintenance background in reactive breakdowns and planned work, and you will manage your time efficiently with minimal supervision. You will be experienced in reading and troubleshooting mechanical drawings, identifying the source of faults and replacing faulty components.

We are looking for candidates with a can‑do attitude, a willingness to learn, and a hands‑on practical approach. A keen eye for identifying root causes, communicating clearly, and being a team player are essential. A strong health and safety ethic is an important part of our Everybody Home Safe Everyday culture. A full UK driving licence is essential.

We encourage all applicants to bring their authentic selves to work. We welcome diversity, inclusion, and equity, and provide support through networks such as Rainbow, REACH, WiSTEM, and Thisability.

In addition, a DBS check is required prior to employment. NWG supports rehabilitation of offenders but does not consider certain unspent convictions.
