Job overview

The Ward Manager has overall responsibility for the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within their ward or department or by their team.

The post holder will use innovative thinking to ensure the provision of high-quality care in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with both National, Local and Trust guidelines and procedures.

The post holder will provide active leadership, acting as a motivator and communicating effectively with the Rainbow team and wider multi-professional team.

Main duties of the job

1. Ensuring that the nursing team and care support team within their ward or department are adequately resourced and organised.
2. To ensure the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed.
3. To deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.
4. Leading and developing the ward nursing team and the ward administration and support teams by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership, clinical support and direction to the team, capitalising on research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision.
5. To always act in a manner that upholds the Trust’s values and working as part of a team to ensure that patients and relatives receive excellent care with compassion.
6. Ensure that Children’s safeguarding processes and procedures are followed and that infants in our care are protected from harm.
7. Demonstrates care and compassion by recognising and responding to individual needs in a warm, thoughtful, sensitive and helpful way.
8. Maintain own nursing skills and competencies to a high a standard to supervise and support all team members.
9. Ensure that CQC Key Lines of Enquiry assessments are maintained up to date and action plans for improved outcomes are introduced and monitored.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

10. Focuses on quality and service provided. Continually tries to identify the most effective way of making the service responsive to meet changing demands.
11. Articulates the shared vision with clarity, keeping focus on improving services and inspiring others to be positively involved.
12. Lead in the management of the ward environment in order to meet the Trust objectives for Clinical Governance and Health and Safety.
13. Carry out regular audits to review the clinical environment and make recommendations for development/improvement.
14. Responsible for managing the ward budget, ensuring that there are adequate provisions of stores and economical use of equipment and provisions.
15. Plan rotas accordingly to ensure good skill mix and adequate staffing levels to ensure that ward areas are covered appropriately. Anticipate and identify staff shortages and re-locate staff as appropriate.
16. Ensure that effective communication has been established with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
17. Communicates very sensitive and distressing information to parents and families.
18. Enables and supports colleagues in developing effective communication skills particularly in difficult situations.
19. Comply fully with the Trust Uniform Policy and ensures all the team comply.
20. Demonstrates familiarity with policies and procedures, including major incident, fire, health and safety, disciplinary, complaints and grievance procedures.
21. Actively promote the raising of concerns by patients, relatives and visitors, staff and students about any aspects of care or patient and staff experience.
22. Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level
23. Manage (with support of their line manager) the investigation of complaints, clinical incidents and errors to identify and implement any required improvement to prevent recurrence.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

24. Demonstrate expert specialist knowledge within chosen clinical field
25. Up to date knowledge of current nursing practice within the area
26. Understanding of Clinical Governance agenda
27. Ability to discuss and implement research-based practice

Desirable criteria

28. Evidence of research-based practice

Skills

Essential criteria

29. Ability to prioritise own workload and that of others
30. Ability to create a positive learning environment
31. Specialist clinical skills within appropriate field
32. Ability to manage a multidisciplinary team
33. Developed problem solving skills
34. Good verbal and report writing skills

Desirable criteria

35. Experience of conducting PDR’s
36. Change management skills
37. Competent with basic IT skills (word processing, spreadsheets, etc)

Experience

Essential criteria

38. Demonstrate broad clinical experience relevant to this post
39. Significant experience at Band 6 level
40. Track record of achievement of objectives
41. Experience of teaching/assessing/supervising others in a clinical setting

Desirable criteria

42. Previous experience of managing a ward/unit
43. Experience of managing a budget
44. Auditing standards of care

Qualifications

Essential criteria

45. Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse Child
46. Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
47. Teaching/mentorship qualification
48. Significant experience in Paediatric nursing
49. Evidence of continuing professional development

50. Leadership/Management Qualification

52. Good attendance record
53. Ability to undertake on call duties
