Junior Clinical Fellow in Spinal Surgery

The appointment will commence on 5th August 2026 for a fixed term of 6 months, extendable to 2 years contingent upon mutual agreement between the Trust and the candidate. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice is required, and sponsorship will be required if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK. The duties of this post are equivalent to CT1/CT2 Level.
The successful candidate will join a department of nine specialist spinal Consultants, a senior clinical fellow, resident doctors (StR, GPVTS and Foundation doctors), and a supported clinical nurse specialist. The clinical work will involve a wide range of spinal conditions including deformity, lumbar and cervical degenerative conditions, trauma, infection and tumour. Opportunities will be available to gain experience in the management of spinal injuries at the Princess Margaret Spinal Injuries Unit, which is situated on the Northern General Hospital campus.
Main duties
The post holder will provide support for the spinal surgery service. There will be an opportunity to participate in the general orthopaedic rota at Foundation/Core trainee level by mutual agreement.
The successful candidate will be expected to assist resident doctors in the daily management of spinal inpatients. There will also be ample opportunity to assist in theatre, attend outpatients and engage in research projects.

Person Specification
Research
* Evidence of research, audit or service review activity
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals
Qualifications
* Registered with the GMC and holding a licence to practice
* Basic Medical Degree
* Working towards MRCS examinations
Clinical experience
* Experience in trauma and orthopaedics or neurosurgery at Foundation/CT equivalent level (minimum 4 months, maximum 18 months)
* NHS Experience (excluding Clinical Attachment)
* Experience of spinal surgery
Teaching and training
* Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
Continuous Professional Development
* Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
