The work area
RevenueWA collects revenue on behalf of the Government and pays grants and subsidies to Western Australians. Although a business unit within DTF, the Commissioner of State Revenue is an independent statutory role and is personally responsible for the administration of State taxation and grant laws by RevenueWA staff. This administrative function covers the application of duties, land tax and payroll tax laws, as well as carrying out compliance audits and investigations, and developing revenue related legislation. RevenueWA increases taxpayer awareness through education programs and manages the legislative appeals process.
The Department of Treasury and Finance currently operates under two sets of organisational values, following its formation on 1 July 2025. In time, as we settle in our new structure and culture, we will collaboratively develop a unified set of values that represent who we are as the Department of Treasury and Finance.
The role
The Principal Review Officer represents the Commissioner of State Revenue in determining objections and managing applications for review and appeals in the State Administrative Tribunal and appeal courts, focusing on complex matters that require a deep understanding of the State Revenue environment and a positive and effective focus on external customer relationships. The position also provides leadership to and inspires excellence in the Review team by modelling the Department’s values and aligning the team with departmental objectives, capability requirements and customer needs.
This position operates in the context of Leading Others. This means that you will motivate and enable others to deliver high quality work. You will balance time between doing the work and coaching, guiding and developing others. This requires a significant shift in thinking from ‘doing’ to supporting others to ‘do good work’; and consideration of present and future needs when allocating time to the team and projects you lead. You will articulate how work is to be done, providing clear direction and feedback.
The ideal candidate
The successful applicant will:
* Be easily able to comprehend and interpret legislation, and readily understand the policy behing legislative schemes;
* Have excellent communication skills, and be able to explain complex concepts using plain English;
* Enjoy applying their analytical skills to a wide variety of legal and factual problems;
* Have a keen eye for detail; and
* Be capable of developing and supporting strategies that influence and improve work outputs within the Review Branch and across RevenueWA.

The Department of Treasury consists of two businesses – Treasury, and Strategic Projects and Asset Sales.
The Treasury business provides economic and financial management and advice to Government. This includes the formulation, implementation and monitoring throughout the year of the State Budget; economic and revenue forecasting; advice and analysis on financial arrangements with the Commonwealth; advice on infrastructure policy and planning; advice on the State’s financial management framework; and management of the Public Ledger.
Strategic Projects and Asset Sales manages the State Government's high-risk infrastructure projects by overseeing major non-residential building projects and pursuing optimum cost, time and quality outcomes. The projects assigned to the Department are typically greater than $100 million in value. In addition, Strategic Projects and Asset Sales has responsibility for the planning and delivery of the State’s asset sales program as determined by Government.
