Job Description
The Street Lighting Team requires a skilled Electrician to maintain and install streetlights, illuminated signs and bollards across the borough, performing a range of physically and mentally demanding tasks, operating vehicles and machinery, and ensuring safety and quality of service while maintaining customer focus and meeting schedules.
Responsibilities
* Undertake general and specialist operational duties in all weathers.
* Drive vehicles and machines with or without trailers or attachments.
* Responsible for day‑to‑day use, maintenance, and security of vehicles, machinery and equipment.
* Provide courteous, customer‑focused service and respond to requests, escalating problems as necessary.
* Carry out fault diagnosis and on‑site assessment of street‑lighting equipment, report findings.
* Respond to emergency incidents, isolate damaged lighting and electrical apparatus and apply standby payments and overtime rates.
* Deliver services to a professional standard within agreed procedures, exercising personal initiative.
* Maintain agreed schedules, and adapt to new priorities directed by the line manager.
* Demonstrate safe working practices to others, including apprentices, trainees and students.
* Comply with Health & Safety, Customer Care, Dignity at Work and other relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
* Execute any duties commensurate with the post as requested by management.
Qualifications
* City & Guilds Electrical Level 3.
* City & Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing or extensive equivalent experience.*
* 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.
* G39 – Working on DNO apparatus or extensive equivalent experience.*
* CSCS / ECS card.
* IPAF certification, or willingness to obtain within 6 months.
* Valid driving licence.
* If holding the 2391 and G39 qualifications, no need to demonstrate criteria marked with an asterisk.
Legal & Compliance
Applicants must be prepared to start with all required legal documents. The council does not hold a Home Office licence and does not sponsor visa holders. This safety‑critical role requires compliance with the Drug & Alcohol Testing Procedure.
