The role
Arqiva is expanding its Smart Water capability, and we're looking for a Senior Principal Engineer to
act as the technical authority for end-to-end smart metering and IoT connectivity solutions across
multiple technologies. This is a senior-level technical role sitting at the heart of our Smart Utilities
engineering function, responsible for ensuring smart water meters, IoT sensors, radios, networks,
suppliers, and data platforms integrate seamlessly into a working customer solution.
The vacancy has a particular focus on LoRaWAN and NB-IoT / cellular-based end devices,
supporting the delivery of Arqiva's next-generation smart metering products.
What you'll be working on
Act as the technical design and integration lead for Smart Water AMI end-device connectivity
across LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, cellular and FlexNet ecosystems
Own the end-to-end systems integration from meter configuration through to data delivery into
customer platforms (meter → radio → base station → head-end → AWS data pipelines →
water insights platforms)
Lead technical engagement with key suppliers and partners, driving: (Defect triage,
Resolution of integration issues, technical assurance and readiness for operational handover)
Support proof of concepts, trials and pilots for new smart water technologies, ensuring robust
delivery and documentation
Provide hands-on engineering support, including: (Data analysis and investigation of
anomalies Validation of device performance and communications reliability)
Collaborate closely with internal engineering teams, Technical Delivery Managers and
operational stakeholders to ensure coordinated execution across multiple moving parts
Mentor and guide engineers on a day-to-day basis, helping shape technical direction,
priorities, and best practice
Support bid activity, tender responses and customer presentations where required, working
with procurement and commercial teams
This is a high-impact role requiring both technical depth and the confidence to drive clarity
across complex programmes.
What we're looking for
Proven experience delivering end-to-end solutions
Smart Metering / AMI networks
IoT device integration
Cellular or radio communications systems
Utility infrastructure environments
LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, cellular IoT, RF communications
Smart meter end devices, sensors and head-end systems
Experience working with suppliers and third-party technology providers, owning technical
integration and issue resolution
Ability to operate as a senior SME across complex system architectures with multiple
dependencies
Hands-on capability in technical investigation and data analysis (e.g., platform diagnostics,
portal-based systems, cloud environments)
Confidence mentoring engineers and influencing stakeholders across departments
A pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset with the ability to direct activity and ensure solutions
come together cohesively
