Overview
This is an exciting time to join Buckinghamshire Archives, as it prepares to relocate from Aylesbury to High Wycombe in 2026. The role is responsible for the day-to-day planning and delivery of an ambitious and outward-looking Archives and Local Studies Service. If you are well organised, a good people manager and have a professional qualification in Archive Administration or a Local Studies related area, this could be a great job for you!
About us
Buckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally.
Buckinghamshire Archives is a county-wide service that is home to over 800 years of Buckinghamshire’s documented history. Its records cover all aspects of life in the county and has something of interest for everyone! Its collections include the internationally important Paralympic sports archives, as well as archives for Milton Keynes Buckinghamshire.
The Service has a foundation of excellent standards for customer care and collections management and focuses its delivery on the four E's: engage, excite, educate and empower.
About the role
Fixed
As a ‘fixed’ worker, you’ll spend most of your time in the same location, which will likely be a fixed office or location where your role is performed. Typically, you’ll be based in the same location as the rest of your team, because you provide a particular service from that fixed location or need access to information there.
The Archive Service is already busy planning for the relocation of the archives, and the post holder will play a key role in progressing and implementing those plans.
The role has direct line management responsibilities: Community Engagement Officer, Customer Access Supervisor and any project staff.
The post is responsible for delivering the various policies, procedures and standards set by the County Archivist, which support the professional and customer delivery aspects of the service.
The post directs and leads the effective day-to-day delivery of the Archives and Local Studies Service, ensuring that excellent customer service is at the core of planning and delivery.
The post is the service lead on health and safety matters
