The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Support Worker to join our team within ward 24 of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The post holder will be expected to ensure safe and effective care that enhances the patient experience. You should have at least 1 year experience at Band 2 level in an acute hospital setting. Candidates should have experience of recording Patient Observations (NEWS), venepuncture and cannulation, ECG recording – or a willingness to learn these skills. You will be able to demonstrate high professional standards of care and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team setting. You will utilise a broad range of knowledge and skills in the assessment, planning and implementation of care for our patients.
We are passionate about supporting the well‑being and development of our team and you will be supported through mentorship and education from our Clinical Nurse Educator.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
* Glasgow Royal Infirmary
* Permanent Contract
* Full‑time Position (36 hours per week)
* The shift pattern for this post is rotational, days, nights and weekends.
Key Responsibilities
* Demonstrate care and compassion to patients, carers and relatives to help ensure high quality person‑centred patient care is delivered at all times.
* Assist patients with activities of daily living, including feeding, bathing and repositioning under the supervision of a trained nurse.
* Provide support to the registered nurse and, where appropriate, other members of the Clinical Team as required.
* Co‑operate with and maintain good relationships with team colleagues and staff from other disciplines attending and treating clients to maximise patient care.
* Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to patients’ families, relatives and carers and refer them to a trained nurse for any questions or suggestions.
* Report observed changes in patients’ physical and psychological needs.
* Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records, such as fluid intake charts, to ensure effective communication.
* Follow NHSGGC policies and procedures to ensure safe working practices for patients and colleagues.
Qualifications and Experience
* SVQ II qualification or equivalent in a relevant area gained through experience, on‑the‑job training and short courses. Compliance with mandatory updates annually.
Knowledge Required
* Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment.
* Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct.
* Completion and maintenance of statutory & mandatory learning activities.
* Awareness and compliance of policies and practices such as Escort Policy, Prevention and control of infection and Health and Safety. The post holder works within the scope of their practice under direct and indirect supervision by a registered nurse (training will be provided).
* Can demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department to support the registered nurse and ensure it is compatible and in good working order. Escalate any concerns to a registered nurse.
Training and Personal Development
* Completion of in‑house training programme as required.
* Continues to develop knowledge and practice through instruction, on‑the‑job learning, teaching sessions and study days, where appropriate.
Skills Required
* Can demonstrate a range of core skills to competently undertake personal care for patients and related tasks and activities.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills, literacy and numeracy skills.
* Good observation skills and recognition of the importance of reporting.
Personal Qualities and Behaviour
* Ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Caring disposition, preferably with experience working in a caring environment/role.
