Purpose of the Role
Colas Ltd has been awarded the 8‑year Maintenance and Response contract for Area 9 by National Highways. The contract covers the Strategic Road Network within Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire, as well as parts of Gloucestershire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. Across a total lane length of around 3,760 km of motorway and trunk roads, Colas will deliver cyclical maintenance, reactive maintenance, incident response, severe weather response and minor works.
Based in Bescot, Walsall WS1 4NL, you will report to the Senior Quantity Surveyor and provide support to the Commercial team with the administration of the Area 9 M & R Contract. Your role will involve the provision of accurate and timely commercial reports and advice to senior management, monitoring contracts and reporting against commercial targets.
Main Responsibilities
As a Quantity Surveyor on the Area 9 contract you will manage budgets, cost forecasting, contract programmes, change and risk registers, and ensure continual improvement of processes, procedures and tools. You will administer contracts and subcontracts, including payment mechanisms, change procedures, resolution of contentious issues, final account agreements and management. Analysis of contracts, subcontract tenders, budget information, cost/budget/value comparisons and cash flow will be part of your duties. You will prepare bills of quantities, schedules of rates and activity schedules in accordance with standard measurement methods. Preparation, maintenance and audit of contemporary records of work progress, and presentation, negotiation and agreement of interim and final accounts will also be required.
You will work closely with the Senior QS to ensure framework quotations and prices are issued on time and comply with contract conditions, corporate governance and group standards.
Ideal Candidate
A BSc in Quantity Surveying (or an equivalent commercially related discipline) with at least five years’ experience in the highways industry is desirable. A background in construction with transferable skills and the right attitude is acceptable. You will be working towards or prepared to work towards professional membership of an organisation such as RICS, CIOB or ICES. A Construction Skills Certification Scheme card or readiness to obtain one is required. A full UK driving licence is mandatory. Excellent numeric and computer literacy, effective verbal and written communication, proactivity, ambition and strong problem‑solving skills are essential. A genuine passion for the role is required.

* A salary between £40,000 and £45,000 (dependent on experience) plus company car/car allowance
