Job Summary
The successful candidate will join our busy team providing a Consultant Ophthalmology service for inpatients, day cases and outpatients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care and the effective running of the department.
This role will also include taking part in the on‑call rota (1:8).
Key responsibilities
* Provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility.
* Participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
* Take equal share in providing subspecialty cover and covering for colleagues during periods of absence, including electronic triage of referrals.
* Support and train junior Ophthalmologists, medical students, and allied professionals.
* Participate fully in clinical governance activities, attend clinical governance half‑days, and undertake annual appraisal leading to revalidation.
* Participate actively in departmental audits.
* Work in close co‑operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues to provide high quality health care and contribute to the Trust’s strategic direction.
* Comply with the General Medical Council’s published guide "Good Medical Practice" including the Duties of a Doctor.

Requirements
Qualifications (Essential)
* MBBS or equivalent
* FRC Ophth or equivalent
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligible for entry within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.
* Hold GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice.
Qualifications (Desirable)
* MRCP
* MD or PhD.
Clinical Experience (Essential)
* Proven clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment of general ophthalmic conditions, including thorough training in phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
* Ability to deal with ophthalmic emergencies.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Clinical Experience (Desirable)
* Subspecialty expertise complementary to departmental needs (e.g., neuro‑ophthalmology and primary care).
Management and Administrative Experience (Essential)
* Ability to provide leadership in developing clinical services and ensure their quality.
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit activities.
* Understanding of mechanisms required when dealing with concerns about professional practice.
* Ability to manage teams.
Management and Administrative Experience (Desirable)
* Attendance on management course.
* Willingness to be ophthalmology College tutor.
* Willingness to be lead clinician in rotation with colleagues.
Teaching Experience (Essential)
* Experience and interest in supervision and training of junior medical staff (FY1, FY2, ST1/2, SpRs).
* Experience of teaching healthcare professionals.
* Ability to teach clinical skills.
Teaching Experience (Desirable)
* Attendance at a course on presentation and teaching skills.
Research Experience (Essential)
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Knowledge and Skills (Essential)
* Demonstrable written and spoken English skills adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
