About Network Rail

Join Network Rail – Where People and Connections Matter. At Network Rail, we're dedicated to keeping passengers and freight moving safely and efficiently across the country. We are committed to creating a diverse, inclusive workplace that reflects the communities we serve.

Job Summary

There are two positions available for a Technician. The role involves a changing shift pattern, including days, nights and weekends. It is an outdoor role that demands comfort working in all weathers. Key requirements include safe working behaviours, a driving licence (category B), and being within a 60‑minute commute of the station.

About the Role (External)

Technicians specialise in a range of disciplines; for this role you will become a specialist in Overhead Lines. You will work with high‑voltage systems, ensuring the railway has the power to run the trains. Working at height is routine, and you will use various specialist tools to measure, adjust, repair and modify cables and wires that keep Britain’s railway running.

Your work will be outdoors in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You may be involved in demanding manual work and may need to transport kit across tricky terrain. Being safety focused, respectful of rules and a team player will be critical as you will often be working next to moving trains traveling at high speed.

Leadership

A natural team player, you will be able to lead the team when asked by the team leader. You will use your skills to deliver work safely and will check that the team has the right competencies to meet our strict safety standards. You will also be a role model for safe working behaviours and be confident to challenge any potential risks to safety.

Communication

Effective communicator – you will need strong communication skills and be able to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.

Technical Skills

Knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline you are applying for.

Safety

You consistently role model safe behaviours, can arrange and implement safe systems of work, and are confident to challenge if you think a situation is unsafe.

Problem Solving

You will be persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, and consistently develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline.

Willingness to Learn

You will consistently develop your skills and competencies relevant to your discipline, keeping up to date with new standards, procedures and instructions.

Relevant Qualification

You will ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline you are applying for, or you have achieved an equivalent level of relevant experience.
