Overview

Join to apply for the Disabled Children Support Worker role at Cornwall Council.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Disabled Children & Therapy Service (DC&TS) and to work in a specialist, multi-disciplinary team which supports disabled children, young people and their families.

This is a public/customer-facing role where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies. The position will be subject to an enhanced criminal record disclosure check.


Responsibilities

* Support and coordinate other services to ensure disabled children, young people and their families have what they need.
* Act as an advocate for the children, work alongside social workers, and provide immediate support at times of family emergency.
* Regularly review the children’s needs in a Child Support Plan.
* Attend training to use evidence-based approaches and intervention skills such as Positive Behaviour Support, Signs of Safety, Motivational Interviewing, Family Partnership Model, and a solution-focused approach.
* Devise Child Support Plans, undertake Section 17 family assessments, undertake direct work with children, contribute to social work-led support, and carry out reviews of progress against outcomes.


About You / Qualifications

* At least 3 years’ experience of working with children and young people with disabilities.
* A relevant level 3 qualification.
* Excellent understanding of the needs of disabled children, young people and their families; recognise that parents are the experts in their own children.
* Strong track record of improving outcomes for disabled children.
* Passion for disability; energetic, motivated and able to make practice engaging.
* Committed to multi-agency working with a strengths-based approach to families to build resilience and reduce dependency.
* Understanding of statutory services and relevant agencies; flexible to include all family members and support networks in partnerships.


The Service & Team

Together for Families Disabled Children & Therapy Service (DC&TS) is a specialist, multi-disciplinary service which supports disabled children, young people and their families whose needs arise from disability or intrinsic condition, with substantial or critical impact on life quality. The service includes a statutory social care component and Tier 2 services such as Early Support, Portage and Supporting Change in Partnership.


The Role

Disabled Children’s Family Workers work as part of multi-disciplinary teams with coordinated support and regular reviews following a statutory social work assessment and child plan. They work under the direction of a Team Manager and hold case responsibility for direct work with children aged 0 to 18 years and their parents/carers. They utilise evidence-based approaches and intervention skills drawn from core curricula such as Outcomes Star, Signs of Safety, Motivational Interviewing, the Family Partnership Model, and a solution-focused, goal-orientated approach.


Working Pattern

This is a Full Time Post: Monday - Thursday 08:45 - 17:15, Friday 08:45 - 16:45. Compressed hours will be considered.
