Overview
The Dental Out of Hours (OOH) service provides urgent dental care to the population of Buckinghamshire. It is hosted by CNWL Community Dental Service, part of CNWL NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder will work weekday evening sessions (3.5 hours), weekend sessions (8 hours) and/or Bank Holiday sessions (8 hours) on a rota basis, totalling 15 hours per week to ensure availability to all direct reports. They will carry out dental nursing duties to include assisting the dental clinician in treating patients. The role requires maintaining high standards of Infection Prevention Control, assisting patients on their treatment journey, and providing triage.
The post-holder will be an established leader with significant line management experience and will be responsible for the line management of the OOH nurses, including direct responsibility for HR tasks such as appraisals, personal development plans, and applying HR policies with support/supervision. They will assist the Dental Operational Manager and Dental Nurse Manager in managing clinic resources and coordinating the operation of the OOH service.
Responsibilities include managing dental nursing staff (appraisals, development and monitoring of Personal Development Plans), recruitment and retention of dental nurses, and handling HR policies (sickness absence, disciplinary, grievances, performance monitoring). Retrieve and produce monthly reports for senior management on finance, activity and performance, and communicate effectively in the management of complex financial and general enquiries from staff and patients.
Other duties include acting as core configurator for the computerised appointment and patient record system, managing filing and recording systems, ensuring relevance and updating, ensuring EDI claims are processed monthly, and performing clerical duties related to the running of the clinic (appointment making, monitoring referrals, phone inquiries, mail, and monetary handling). Undertake duties delegated by Clinicians and senior management; stores/stock control duties may be required; monitor and maintain stock levels of consumables.

Responsibilities
* Provide chair-side assistance to the clinician, including treatment of special care patients with learning or physical disabilities, complex medical conditions, diagnosed mental health conditions, and anxious patients (adults and children) under clinician supervision.
* Assist in the completion of patient records using computerised systems; ensure the surgery is prepared, welcoming, and compliant with infection prevention controls, waste disposal, and general safety standards.
* Maintain confidentiality and accurate records in line with local policies and statutory frameworks for information governance.
* Ensure high standards of infection prevention and control, safe disposal of clinical waste, and adherence to health and safety requirements.
* Provide clerical and administrative support: appointment scheduling, referrals monitoring, telephone handling, mail collection, and monies processing as required.
* Assist in audits, screenings, or epidemiological surveys as directed.
Qualifications and experience
* Demonstrated line management experience with responsibility for HR tasks (appraisals, personal development plans, policy implementation).
* Experience in recruitment, retention, and staff development within a dental nursing team.
* Ability to manage clinic resources and coordinate service operations in a dental setting.
* Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse patient groups and clinical staff.
