Specialty Registrar in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery (ST6-8)

This is a fixed‑term one‑year specialty registrar post commencing from 5 August 2026. It offers an excellent opportunity to gain high‑quality surgical experience in a supportive and well‑structured clinical environment and to attain competencies before core surgical training applications.
The role supports a busy department delivering upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and emergency surgical activity. The post will involve 1:12 on‑call duties on the registrar rota.
Main duties of the job
Your duties will primarily involve the care of in‑patients and the admission and primary care of emergency cases, including the performance of surgical procedures. Opportunities will also arise to run subspecialty clinics or assist and perform elective surgery according to learning objectives, previous experience and competencies. The training programme includes regular audit and teaching sessions, and on‑call duties during working hours cover the general surgery acute take.
Team and Working Environment
The clinical team comprises fourteen consultants, two associate specialists, four staff grades, ten specialist registrars, three core trainees, one clinical fellow and two FY2 trainees, working in an 85‑bed general surgery department.
Job responsibilities
Key responsibilities include patient care in the department, participation in elective and emergency surgical procedures, performance of audits and teaching, and working the designated on‑call rota.
Person specification
Qualifications
* FRCS/MRCS
* Experience training and competence in upper gastrointestinal surgery
Ability and knowledge
* Basic surgical experience and logbook evidence
* Evidence of assessment, management and operating on patients with upper GI surgical presentations
