Perform highly specialised radiographic procedures, ensuring that high professional standards of work are achieved and maintained, whilst applying ALARA principles using IR (ME) R guidelines. Be aware of and follow current IR (ME) R procedures. Participate in an on-call service as allocated. Organise, plan and prioritise workload according to clinical need.


Responsibilities

* Organise inpatient workload coordinating the availability of porters, escorts or doctors, adjusting plans in cases of unavailability or unforeseen problems.
* Adjust work pattern when outpatient demand from clinics exceeds expectations.
* Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, taking the lead in advising on radiation protection of the other team members and patient whilst ensuring all team members are adequately protected.
* Supervise, advise and mentor radiographer grade staff, support staff, students and nursing staff.
* Participate in the training of student radiographers on placement in the department.
* Train other staff in the use of diagnostic equipment and systems operated within the department.
* Maintain and update patient records using RIS, PACS and EPR systems.
* Act as practitioner for X-ray referrals deciding the most appropriate investigation based upon the clinical information provided and on assessment of the patient.
* Monitor patient conditions to ensure adverse reactions are recognised and dealt with promptly and appropriately.
* Advise medical staff, nurse practitioners and Advanced practitioners on the justification of examinations and suitable alternatives.
* Suggest and implement improvements to services, policies and protocols based on research and evidence-based practice to improve the service the department offers, using ongoing audit to monitor the effect of changes.
* Maintain accurate equipment records and report any faults to a senior member of staff.
* Perform daily, weekly and monthly equipment tests for quality assurance, monitor the results on a database for use by the Regional Radiation Protection Service, noting any inconsistencies and taking appropriate action informing the Radiation Protection Advisor.
* Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure all staff uphold this principle.
* Undertake regular CPD training and maintain a portfolio of evidence to ensure that a high level of professional knowledge and expertise is achieved and maintained to both self and peer groups.
* Be competent in all of the specialised projections undertaken and train other staff in these techniques.
* Be familiar with the departmental computer systems and enter patient data to enable others to access details of attendances and reports.
* Assess the patient’s fitness and obtain consent before positioning to obtain diagnostic images and adapt techniques to accommodate disabilities or pathologies.
* Assess initial radiograph images, interpret findings and decide on how to continue the examination based on the patient’s clinical condition and pathology.
* Recognise abnormal pathology during specialist diagnostic examinations and alert appropriate medical staff.
* Empathise, persuade, negotiate with and provide reassurance to patients within the department.
* Advise on radiation dose and effects. Hand over areas of responsibility when moving on ensuring continuity and smooth running of the department.
* Participate in ongoing research projects and be aware of and follow research protocols for imaging procedures.
* Modify and implement modifications to departmental protocols as necessary to ensure that radiation dose is kept to a minimum.
