Detective Superintendent - Safeguarding Governance
1 full‑time, permanent position
Location: Wakefield
Role Overview
West Yorkshire Police invite applications from substantive Detective Superintendents with at least 12 months experience at the Superintendent rank and a proven track record in Child Safeguarding/Child Protection at a senior level. The role will report to the Chief Superintendent for Local Policing – Safeguarding Governance and focuses on delivering outstanding child protection services across the force.
Responsibilities
 * Oversee all child protection processes within West Yorkshire Police.
 * Conduct regular quality assurance checks to maintain standards of child protection investigations.
 * Develop, implement and manage all policies and procedures related to child protection.
 * Build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with peers, Police Commanders and partner agencies across West Yorkshire.
 * Oversee and monitor the timely and accurate provision of management information, KPIs, and statistics to inform decision making within the Force.
 * Coordinate recommendations from statutory reviews of WYP's child protection activities, develop action plans and oversee implementation.
 * Identify development areas in WYP's child protection delivery and ensure the training offer is agile to respond.
 * Support the organisation’s continual improvement and shape its future by reducing demand, improving performance and delivering positive outcomes.
Key Qualifications & Experience
 * Substantive Detective Superintendent with a minimum of 12 months experience in rank.
 * Proof of a senior level track record in Child Safeguarding/Child Protection.
 * Support from Senior Leadership Team/Chief Officer team (as appropriate).
 * Up‑to‑date and satisfactory Personal Development Review (PDR) or equivalent.
 * Meet WYP attendance standard.
 * Excellent operational footprint with evidence of exceptional delivery.
 * Strong stakeholder engagement skills at all levels.
 * Strategic drive to improve and deliver performance outcomes.
 * Innovative and creative approach with experience of successful large‑scale change.
 * Commitment and passion for the public service in West Yorkshire.
