We are looking for a hard working individual to join us as a teacher of languages (French).
St John Baptist CiW High School (“St John’s”) is an 11-18 co-educational comprehensive with approximately 1,000 pupils on roll, which includes over 200 sixth formers. Located in Aberdare, the school boasts extensive playing fields and is adjacent to the Dare Valley Country Park.
Our standards of achievement are consistently high, with pupils achieving very well compared to local and national comparators. However, whilst the school is proud of its academic achievements, significant emphasis is placed on the formation of the ‘whole-person’. Our distinctive Christian ethos is at the heart of life at St John’s. Local clergy, who are regular visitors to the school, play an active role in the spiritual life of the school. We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities to support pupils to develop their skills in creative and expressive arts, languages, and sport.
One of the many strengths at St John’s is the strong relationships between pupils and staff. These effective working relationships help make the school a great place to work and learn. Our pupils are happy, articulate, and hard-working. They are a genuine asset to the St John’s family. In our most recent Estyn inspection, the attitudes and behaviour of our pupils was described as, “exceptional”. We are fortunate to have a talented and hard-working group of staff who work tirelessly to ensure all pupils can achieve their potential.
About the role
Languages is a popular subject at St John’s. Standards at all key stages are consistently, at least, in line with modelled expectations. Pupils study either French, Spanish or German as part of the curriculum on a rolling basis. The department forms part of the faculty of languages, which includes Welsh. Whilst there is a separate subject leader for modern foreign languages, a Head of Faculty oversees the work of the team to disseminate effective practice and support delivery of high-quality. The faculty is situated on the first floor of main teaching building. Following substantial investment into the school’s IT infrastructure, each classroom is equipped with the highest technology to support learning. This includes interactive screens and classroom visualizers.
The role would suit a newly qualified teacher searching for their first teaching post, or a more experienced teacher looking for a fresh challenge in a new context. All new members of staff receive a bespoke programme of induction, which includes an allocated member of staff to support with the operational elements of joining a new school, as well as a tailored support package to meet individual needs. In addition, all teaching staff are issued with a school 2-in-1 laptop device.
The role is offered at 0.4FTE but there is potential for up to 0.6FTE if an additional subject, can be offered.
Deadline: 12.00pm on 2nd June 2026;
Interview: w/c 8th June 2026**; and
Start Date: 1st September 2026.
** Early applications are encouraged. The school reserves the right to interview and appoint prior to the closing date of the advertisement, should the school be able to appoint an appropriate candidate.
