Main Duties:
We are looking for a creative and motivated person to work with a 10-year-old with Cerebral Palsy. The main role of the Personal Assistant and Advocate is to support him for 5 hours per week in accessing meaningful activities and prioritizing his needs. He is delayed in speech, can walk using a frame, and self-propels his wheelchair.
This is a flexible role offering consistent weekly hours from 3pm on weekdays and weekends, to suit both the candidate and family.
We seek individuals interested in physical disability and communication processes.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as a safe person that he feels comfortable and confident with to enjoy exploring new places, such as parks, swimming, riding his adapted bike, and picnics.
* Personal care including toileting.
* Manual handling including transferring into his wheelchair or walking frame and fitting splints.
* Assist him to be independent wherever possible, supporting and enabling rather than doing for him.
* Enable access to meaningful daily activities, including sensory exploration, communication sessions, music, and intensive interaction.
* Ensure his personal care needs are prioritized, including access to suitable facilities like a changing places toilet.
Person Specification - Education/Qualifications
* No qualifications are essential, as we employ a values-based recruitment model.
* Useful training includes manual handling, disability awareness, and administering medication.
Experience
* No experience is required; we focus on values-based recruitment.
* Useful experience includes working with individuals with high support needs and undertaking personal care duties.
Skills and Abilities
* Confident and sensitive communication with various people.
* Ability to advocate for and represent the child's views and needs.
* Ability to be present and connect with the child for meaningful communication.
